Activity Note:Your third day takes you on a picturesque journey from Priština to a charming Ottoman Prizren, known as the cultural capital of Kosovo. We will explore the famous Bear Sanctuary and visit the magnificent symbol of Orthodox heritage – Gračanica monastery.

Our first stop today, nestled near the picturesque Badovac Lake on the outskirts of Pristina, is where the wild heart of Kosovo beats in the form of its majestic bears – the Bear Sanctuary. Here, you’re in for some bear-y cool encounters: imagine watching these noble creatures foraging, taking dips in pools, and if fortune smiles on you, engaging in a playful tussle or two. It’s a tale of transformation, where every bear, from the gentle giants Ero and Mira to the mischievous duo Hana and Stivi, has a story of resilience that led them to this sanctuary, their forever home.

This will be a truly immersive experience where you learn about bear conservation and the critical importance of protecting wildlife.

Bear Sanctuary,Kosovo

After the Bear Sanctuary, we are heading to one of the most essential Orthodox symbols and a jewel of Serbian-Byzantine art in Kosovo-Monastery Gracanica. A short lake-side ride will take us to the monastery, the second most crucial Orthodox site in the territory, just after the Patriarchate of Peć.

Over the centuries, it went through a tumultuous past but was spared by the last war. Protected by Kosovar police, Gracanica Monastery is today home to about twenty nuns who, in addition to their monastic duties, are also engaged in embroidery, agriculture, and icon painting.

We will walk through the premises of the monastery, learn more about the fantastic Byzantine techniques this monastery is glorified for, and admire the Latin inscriptions on the stones from the Ulpiana site.

Kosovo Trip

After enjoying the serene beauty and rich history of Gracanica Monastery, we’ll discover the perfect spot for lunch nearby and settle down in a charming, family-owned restaurant. Here, you’ll savor authentic local specialties, each dish telling its own story of Kosovo’s culinary heritage.

In the late afternoon, as the golden hues of sunset blanket the city, we’ll arrive in the picturesque Prizren, where history and culture intertwine gracefully along the banks of the Lumbardhi River. Upon arrival, we’ll smoothly transition into our cozy accommodations with hassle-free hotel check-in, ensuring you’re comfortably settled and ready to embrace the enchanting evening ahead.

With the keys to your room, the rest of the evening is yours to enjoy at your leisure.

As we stroll, we’ll visit the Town Museum and marvel at the striking Sinan Pasha Mosque, built in 1615. We’ll cross the Old Stone Bridge, which resembles the Emperor’s Bridge in Sarajevo, and admire the stunning Hamam Of Gazi Mehmet Pasha. Engaging with local vendors, you’ll find an opportunity to purchase hand-made clothes, shoes, or souvenirs at meager prices, adding a tangible piece of Prizren’s rich cultural heritage to your collection. This journey through Prizren is not just a tour; it’s an immersive experience into the soul of Kosovo.

Prizren - Kosovo

As we ascend, we’ll take a moment to explore the intriguing ruins of the Orthodox Church “Our Lady of Ljevis.” Built-in 1306 by King Stefan Milutin, this historical gem is now celebrated as a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance and proudly listed on UNESCO’s List of World Heritage in Danger, nestled within the heart of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo.

Just a stone’s throw from these captivating ruins, the mighty Kalaja Fortress awaits, standing as a proud symbol of Prizren since the 11th century. This fortress is not just a relic; it’s the ultimate viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramas of Prizren, the majestic peaks of Prokletije, and Peja. Make sure your cameras are ready because the views here are like holding Prizren in the palm of your hand – spellbinding!

And here’s the cherry: once we reach the summit, we’ll celebrate our ascent with a sip of the legendary Skenderbeg whiskey, toasting to the beauty and history beneath our feet. As you roam through the fortress’s numerous chambers, underground halls, and intricate network of walls that once shielded Prizren, feel free to wander, explore, and find your favorite spot in this ancient stone labyrinth.

MAKE SURE TO TASTE WHILE IN PRIZREN

Whether you’re into ancient history, love soaking up culture, or are a nature enthusiast, there’s something here for everyone. Let’s dive into some fantastic activities you might want to add to your list:

  • Mantija: These are delicious little dumplings filled with meat, similar to Turkish manti, and often served with a dollop of yogurt—perfect for a light yet satisfying meal.
  • Flija: A traditional Albanian dish that you’ll find in Prizren, flija is made with layers upon layers of crepe-like pancakes, brushed with cream and served with sour cream. It’s often prepared for special occasions and is a must-try for its unique texture and taste.
  • Sujuk: Spicy and flavorful, sujuk is a dry, fermented sausage reminiscent of its Turkish counterpart. It’s often grilled and can be found in many of the city’s eateries, offering flavor with each bite.
  • Qebapa: These small, grilled minced meat rolls are a favorite in Prizren. Served with flatbread, raw onions, and a savory yogurt sauce, qebapa makes for a hearty and delicious meal. Very similar to Sarajevski ćevap!
  • Tavë Prizreni: A regional specialty, this oven-baked dish consists of meat (usually lamb or beef) mixed with eggs, yogurt, and rice, creating a comforting, creamy casserole bursting with flavor.

Along the way, we will do a wine tasting at the famous Stone Castle winery, explore the beautiful Gjakova, and visit the UNESCO-protected Visoki Dečani Monastery.

Nestled in the heart of Kosovo’s picturesque landscapes, our first stop will be the Stone Castle Winery, celebrated for its dedication to crafting fine wines, utilizing ancient techniques passed down through generations and contemporary methods to ensure each bottle captures the essence of Kosovo’s unique terroir.

You’ll learn about the meticulous process of turning grapes into the award-winning wines that have put Stone Castle on the map. And, of course, no visit would be complete without a tasting session. The Stone Castle Winery is not just a stop on our journey; it’s a celebration of Kosovo’s burgeoning wine scene, where you can relax, enjoy, and maybe even discover your new favorite wine.

Our next stop is Gjakova. Picture a place so charming it feels like stepping into a storybook. Once a bustling trade center during the Ottoman era, Gjakova now invites us to slow down and soak in its rich history leisurely.

Imagine wandering through the Gjakova Grand Bazaar – not just any market, but one of the oldest and longest in the Balkans. We’re talking over a kilometer of friendly faces, local life, and the chance to see artisans in action. Think woodworkers carving with care and vendors showcasing the most exquisite wedding costumes you’ve ever seen. It’s a feast for the senses and a fantastic way to connect with the heart of Kosovo.

And here’s the cherry on top: we’ll break for lunch in Gjakova. Imagine sitting down to a meal where every bite is a taste of local tradition, a moment to relax and reflect on the morning’s adventures. This isn’t just lunch; it’s a pause in a place that feels like home, even for a moment.

Visoki Decani Monastery - Kosovo

Before we make our way to Peja, we’ve got a special visit lined up: the UNESCO-protected Decani Monastery, just 20 km south of Pejë. Picture this: a stunning blend of Byzantine and Western medieval architecture dating back to the 14th century, making it not just a building but a story etched in stone and frescoes. Speaking of frescoes, Decani is a treasure chest with over 1000 of them, making it the best-preserved Serbian monastery around.

In a constantly changing world, Decani Monastery stands as a testament to history, so much so that it’s guarded by KFOR forces to preserve its legacy. But it’s not all about the past here; we’ll meet with a local priest who’ll give us the inside scoop on the monastery’s vibrant life, from the daily prayers that echo its walls to the creation of souvenirs, wines, rakijas, and other local delights.

In the evening hours, we will arrive to beautiful Peja, which is believed to be built on the ruins of an ancient Roman town known as Siparantum. Peja is one of the rare cities proudly keeping both Ottoman and medieval Serbian architecture. Your hotel will be less than 600m from the city center, yet hidden deep in the central city park with over 100 years old trees, far from car noise and every day, life yet close enough to feel the city’s atmosphere.

Our first stop will be a short downhill hike from where we can admire the crystal clear and powerful waters reflecting the impressive arch bridge that connects the canyon. In front of the bridge, you will be able to witness a rock with a drawing of an athlete who is believed to be from the Pelasgian period.

As the road narrows, we can admire numerous water springs, including a 25-meter-high waterfall. DAY 7: Peja to Pristina

Destination:Pristina, Kosovo
Inclusions:4* Hotel | Mitrovica Walking Tour | Farewell Dinner
Driving Time:3h

Is Kosovo safe

Activity Note:Today we are meant to start early after breakfast and visit the complex Mitrovica, a segregated town known for its pedestrian bridge under the protection of KFOR forces. We will do lovely and leisurely walks, learn about Kosovo during Yugoslavia, and admire the grandiose Yugoslav Monument to Fallen Miners.

After breakfast, we will head back to Pristina, and on the way, we will make sure to visit one of the most infamous Balkan towns, Mitrovica.

During the drive, and considering the experience so far, we will try to finally reach the never-ending question of Kosovo and all the reasons behind (non) recognizing it as a valid and independent country. Mitrovica’s present ground was, due to its geographical position between the rivers Ibar and Sitnica a prehistoric center and an Illyrian necropolis.

The entire Kosovo territory of Mitrovica was under the rule of the Bulgarian state of Tsar Simeon (897-927). At the same time, after the fall of this kingdom, it returned to the rule of the Byzantines.

We will cross the notorious bridge on the river Ibar, the scene of too many riots and conflicts even after the war and symbol of segregation in this city to this day.

The city was called Kosovska Mitrovica until 1982, when it was in line with the then policy that in each republic and province of the former Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, one city should bear the name of lifelong President Josip Broz Tito; the name was changed to Titova Mitrovica.

Due to the previous conflicts, in 2013, during the local elections, the city was divided into the municipalities of North and South Mitrovica, making it one city under two roofs, two institutions, two systems, and two states.

After the lunch break in Mitrovica, we will do some nice and easy hike through the forest towards the grandiose Yugoslavian spomenik built by a famous Yugoslav architect, Bogan Bogdanovic, the same architect who was in charge of the spectacular Jasenovac monument.

This massive concrete monument is dedicated to those who were lost during the fighting of World War II and will be a perfect chance to, once again, make a short time travel back to the theatre of communism playing the socialist drama.

As the day ends, we will arrive to Pristina and let you relax a bit before our farewell dinner.

KOSOVO FAREWELL DINNER

Our adventure in Kosovo wraps up with a farewell dinner about fun, food, and friends in Pristina.

Picture this: a vibrant local eatery where we’ll dive into a mouth-watering spread of Kosovar delights, laughing and sharing tales from our journey. It’s our last hoorah, so we’ll make it count, toasting to the unforgettable moments we’ve collected. With full bellies and even fuller hearts, we’ll say our goodbyes

Life-changing : )

Before I went on this tour I had such a different impression of the Balkan region–I thought I was going as a way to see history and to explore a part of the world that was interesting to me for personal reasons, but it was so much more than that.

These countries are extraordinarily beautiful (particularly, in my opinion, Montenegro, Croatia, Bosnia & Herzegovina, and Kosovo) and have such rich cultural experiences that have changed my life and enriched my understanding of cultural and religious history immeasurably.

There are many ways to see the Balkans; I looked at dozens of those ways and got dozens of quotes from group-tour companies. I chose Funky Tours, though, because they were so willing to customize the experience (for just me) and because they were so open and honest about the process and about giving me the greatest adventure for a reasonable price.

I was a little uncertain about not paying or even knowing all of the details further in advance, but let me assure anyone who might have a similar anxiety–they are real and will give you the adventure of a lifetime! I felt truly taken care of from the moment I got picked up until the moment I was dropped off.

I specifically spent a majority of my time with Emir, Stefan, and Tarik–they were all so kind and looked after me like I was a dear friend. They were always thinking ahead to make sure my needs, concerns, and interests were prioritized. No joke–I had to hold back tears when I left Stefan and Tarik on the last day because we had had so much fun (or at least I had) during the adventure and they were so thoughtful about taking care of me each day. Each guide I had (and there were many who accompanied me along the way) was an outstanding human with stories that will stay with me forever.

I would highly recommend Funky Tours to anyone traveling in this part of the world!

All that is funky–and then some.

As I researched possible tours of the Balkans, I wanted to avoid large groups travelling by coach. I also wanted an itinerary that would balance exploration of nature, culture, and history. Funky Tours looked especially promising.

After recently completing my tour, I am happy to say that Funky Tours far exceeded my high expectations.

Emir was our expert guide and driver, but he was also so much more. He shared his wide and deep knowledge of the region and its history, vivid anecdotes from personal experience, and a delightful sense of humor.

I admired his candor and thoughtfulness in addressing difficult, sometimes political questions, and marveled at his resourcefulness as a troubleshooter who nimbly addressed any and all issues throughout the trip.

Our itinerary was rich and fascinating, often taking us off the beaten track for immersion experiences that helped burst the tourist bubble. I should add that the tour struck a fine balance between comfort and physical activity. Hotel accommodations were excellent, the van was comfortable, and meals provided by the tour were tasty.

At the same time, I enjoyed our walking tours and light hiking in beautiful natural surroundings. Funky Tours also wisely combines structured days with plenty of free time for exploration. As much as I recommend Emir, I have no doubt that everyone at Funky Tours is a capable professional. Just keep in mind that whatever your associations with “funky”, mine are fun, informative, mind-expanding, and first rate.

Memorable experience

Funky tours provided an unforgettable experience with Ennis and Emir as our guides for this tour. We took a two-week tour with them which covered Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro and Kosovo.

We immersed in so much history and wonderful culinary experience. As I traveled with my 70+ year old aunt and mom and 3-year old son, many accommodations were considered within the planning of the tour which gave us a memorable experience.

All hotels planned were strategically located. I would highly recommend Funky Tours for your trip to this fairly unexplored region of the world.

Phenomenal 5 country private balkan tour with 3 day extension to Kosovo! Excellent guide, Excellent tour company!

My wife and I did the 5 country balkan tour with a 3 day extension to kosovo for 3 weeks in april, 2023.

It was AMAZING! We had the greatest tour guide, Emir, who we almost adopted as a second son! We did the private tour starting in slovenia and ending in Albania, which was about 3 weeks.

First of all, this was without question the best tour company we ever used, and we travel a lot and used many tour companies. Ema was extremely prompt in answering all our questions, and we had a few zoom calls with her as well. she was very patient and listened to our requests and was very flexible in what we wanted to change in the itinerary.

Our guide, Emir, was also fantastic! He was very flexible, he even went out of the way to show us some interesting places not on the itinerary, He was extremely knowledgeable about all the countries, especially Bosnia, since this is where he lives.

One of many highlights of the trip was learning about the Jewish history of the Balkans. Emir was able to show us the synagogue in Sarajevo and go to Friday night services and meet some members of the congregation.

HE went above and beyond to make this trip so memorable. He was also an excellent driver and the car was very comfortable. The hotels were all 4 star and were very clean and well located.

All the breakfasts were included, some better than others, but all in all great. Also, the price of the tour was very reasonable considering all that was included. We had a few local guides that were very knowledgeable and friendly.

We would definitely recommend this company if you want to have the trip of a lifetime!
