This 16-day Balkan journey is designed for travellers who want context, depth and human stories, not surface-level sightseeing.
Covering Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania, the route balances well-known highlights with places that rarely appear in standard itineraries.
You will enjoy 15 nights in comfortable 4★ hotels, with an itinerary paced to allow real engagement rather than constant movement. Some days are active, others slower – intentionally so.
What defines this experience are the people behind it. Tours are led by local guides who grew up here, many of whom lived through the region’s recent history. Stories are personal, conversations are open, and history is explained honestly – without simplification.
Food, wine and everyday life are integral to understanding the Balkans. Meals take place in family-run restaurants, small taverns and regional wineries, where traditions are shared as naturally as the food itself.
This is not a tour that tries to make the Balkans look simple or polished. It embraces complexity, contrasts and contradictions – from alpine landscapes and Adriatic islands to post-war cities and remote villages. The result is a journey that offers understanding, not just impressions.
A private version of the itinerary is available for travellers who wish to adjust pacing, focus or comfort level.
Funky Tours doesn’t offer generic Balkan tours. We offer access, honesty and perspective, shaped by people who live this region every day.
Operated in-house by Funky Tours
This tour is designed and delivered by the same local team that stays with you on the road. There are no intermediaries or third-party operators involved, ensuring consistency, flexibility and a human approach throughout the journey.

– Overnight stay in a 4★ hotel
– Guided orientation walk in Ljubljana
– Welcome drink with tour leader and fellow travellers
Optional activities
– Ljubljana Castle visit

Your journey through the Balkans begins quietly, intentionally.
Upon arrival in Ljubljana, meet your driver and transfer to your hotel in the city centre. Early check-in is subject to availability, but luggage storage is arranged so you can begin absorbing the city immediately.
Once the group has gathered, meet your tour leader for a relaxed welcome drink. This isn’t a briefing or a formal inspection of what lies ahead. It’s simply the first moment of shared space.
Faces become familiar, the road ahead takes shape, and the rhythm of the journey begins to form.

Later, head out for an easy orientation walk through Ljubljana’s old town with a local guide.
This walk is designed to open the city rather than explain it completely. Baroque bridges, riverside cafés and compact streets reveal Ljubljana’s balance of elegance and ease, without overwhelming detail.
Throughout the day, your tour leader remains nearby – offering practical guidance, local insight and the reassurance of good timing, while allowing you the space to settle in naturally.
FREE TIME IDEAS IN LJUBLJANA
During your time in Ljubljana, you will have some free time slots, during which you can opt for some exciting activities in Ljubljana. We recommend a few of the following for independent explorations:
A former Austro-Hungarian military barracks transformed into an alternative cultural centre. Known for street art, music venues and a lively nightlife scene, Metelkova offers a different perspective on Ljubljana’s urban culture. The nearby Museum of Contemporary Art (+MSUM) is also worth a visit.
Ljubljana’s largest city park, located just outside the historic centre. Ideal for a relaxed walk, light recreation or a quiet break from sightseeing, with tree-lined paths, open green spaces and views of the city.
A landmark overlooking the old town, originally built as a medieval fortress. The castle can be reached on foot or by funicular and offers panoramic views over Ljubljana.

– Funky Tours treat: tasting of Bled’s traditional cream cake
– Breakfast
Travel time
– Approx. 2.5 hours total, private vehicle
Optional activities
– Visit to Bled Castle
This is a full day that moves through Slovenia in layers, from the underground world to river-carved landscapes and finally to the open calm of Lake Bled.
Depart Ljubljana after breakfast and travel west to Postojna Cave. The visit begins with a short underground train ride, followed by a guided walk through large chambers carved beneath the surface, offering a striking contrast to the landscapes above.
After Postojna, we are offering you an amazing but optional visit to Vintgar Gorge, where a scenic walk follows the river along raised walkways through a narrow, water-carved canyon.
In the early afternoon, we will continue north towards Lake Bled, where the afternoon is spent at a relaxed pace by the lake.
When we get to the lake, exploring it is unlimited. If you love walking, you must try a circular tour around the lake, lasting from 1.30 to 2h. We are not putting pressure. We are just suggesting that you should take a walk around the lake 🙂 We will also do the famous Pletna boat ride.
To explore the island with the church, souvenir shop, and local cafe bar, we usually leave for about 45min to 1 hour. From the dock where the boats dock to the top of the island, you are separated by 99 steps, so be prepared to climb.
FOR EXTRA LAKE EXPLORATIONS:
For those interested in further exploring the Lake Bled region, we recommend climbing the Mala Osojnica lookout point and enjoying the most beautiful views of the lake.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Kremšnita tasting – A relaxed lakeside pause to enjoy Bled’s famous cream cake, served the way locals do it. Take a seat by the water, let the views open up across the lake and islands, and slow the rhythm of the day. Kremšnita is on us.

– Free time to explore the city
Travel time
– Approx. 1.5 hours, private vehicle
Optional activities
– Museum of Broken Relationships
– Zagreb Funicular
Today is a slower, city-focused day that eases the transition from Slovenia into Croatia and allows time to explore and settle into a new rhythm.
After breakfast, depart Ljubljana and travel to Zagreb, Croatia’s capital. Upon arrival, join a guided walking tour through the historic Upper Town, offering an introduction to the city’s layers of history and everyday life.
Zagreb doesn’t try to impress loudly. It is a city that wins you over in small, unexpected details. During free time, you may choose to visit the Museum of Broken Relationships or take a short ride on the Zagreb Funicular, often described as one of the shortest public cable railways in the world.
The remainder of the day is free to explore at your own pace, whether settling into local cafés, wandering neighbourhood streets, or simply enjoying the city’s atmosphere.
Your tour leader remains available throughout the day for suggestions and practical support.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN ZAGREB:
A short ride connecting the Lower and Upper Town. Often mentioned as one of the shortest public funicular railways in the world, it offers a quick and slightly nostalgic way to move between the two parts of the city.
A small and unusual museum built around personal stories and objects connected to past relationships. It offers a thoughtful and uniquely Zagreb perspective on everyday human experiences.
One of the liveliest streets in Zagreb, lined with cafés and restaurants. A good place to pause, people-watch and get a feel for the city’s everyday rhythm.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Transfer from Zagreb to Split by private vehicle
– Entrance fee to Plitvice Lakes National Park
– Visit to the Željava Air Base
Travel time
– Approx. 4.5 hours total, private vehicle
Today is a defining transition day, moving from continental Croatia toward the Adriatic coast and revealing just how sharply landscapes and histories shift across a single border of space.
Depart Zagreb in the morning and travel south toward Plitvice Lakes National Park. Along the way, there is an optional stop at the Croatian Homeland War Museum in Turanj. For those who choose to stop, this visit offers grounded context to the 1990s conflict and the realities that shaped this region long after the maps were redrawn.
By early afternoon, arrive at Plitvice Lakes National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the country’s most defining natural spaces. Wooden walkways trace the edges of lakes and waterfalls, while short boat crossings link different sections of the park.
The visit is intentionally unhurried, allowing time to walk, stop, observe and simply let the scenery settle rather than rushing through it.
Before leaving the park, pause together for a simple coffee or refreshment. A small but intentional reset, a chance to reflect on what has been seen before the day shifts tone once again.
From Plitvice Lakes we will head towards Željava Air Base, a vast abandoned Cold War military complex hidden beneath the mountains. Concrete, tunnels and silence replace forests and water. The contrast is intentional and unforgettable.
Arrival in Split marks the first real meeting with the Adriatic, bringing a day defined by contrast and movement to a close.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Guided walking tour of Split
– Free time to explore the city
Optional activities
– Half-day excursion to Trogir, Solin and Klis Fortress
– Half-day boat trip to nearby islands such as Šolta or Brač
Split is not a museum. It’s a city that lives inside one. The morning is intentionally unhurried, giving you space to feel the city before stepping into it. Salt in the air, light on the stone, the Adriatic just within reach.
Later, meet your local guide and head into the historic heart of Split on foot. The walking tour moves through narrow stone streets and lively squares where the medieval layers and modern routines overlap seamlessly.
Cafés spill onto ancient stones, homes lean against palace walls, and daily life moves through centuries without pause. This constant coexistence is what gives Split its unmistakable rhythm and character.
Diocletian’s Palace still forms the core of Split, not as a preserved monument, but as a living structure shaped by everyday life. This day is about understanding Split not through museums, but through the way people live inside its history.
The afternoon is yours to shape. Continue exploring the old town, linger by the sea, settle into a café, or head out on one of the optional half-day excursions to nearby highlights such as Trogir, Brač or Šolta. Your tour leader is nearby to help point you in the right direction.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN SPLIT
Rising above the city, Marjan Hill offers easy walking trails and viewpoints overlooking Split and the surrounding coastline. It is a good option for a relaxed walk, some shade and a break from the city streets. Your tour leader can point you in the right direction and suggest routes that best fit your pace.
Split is closely tied to the sea. During warmer months, spending time at the beach is part of everyday life. From Bačvice, known for its lively atmosphere and the local picigin game, to quieter spots such as Bene or Kašjuni, there are many options within easy reach of the centre. Your tour leader is happy to suggest beaches based on weather, season and your preferences.
Dalmatian cuisine reflects its coastal setting, with Mediterranean flavours and strong local traditions. Free time in Split is a good opportunity to explore the food scene independently. If helpful, your tour leader can suggest places that suit your mood, timing and budget.
Evenings in Split often unfold naturally in small bars, narrow streets and along the waterfront. Those interested in a more social night out will find plenty of options. Your tour leader can share up-to-date suggestions, depending on the day and atmosphere.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Transfer from Split to Dubrovnik by private vehicle
– Funky Tours Treat, oyster tasting in Ston
Travel time
– Approx. 3 hours, private vehicle
After an early breakfast in Split, the road follows the southern coastline, with open views of the Adriatic gradually replacing the inland rhythm of the days before. The landscape begins to stretch, signaling a shift toward the country’s far south.
Before reaching Dubrovnik, stop in the small town of Ston.

Time is set aside to walk through the old streets and along sections of the stone walls, opening views over the historic salt pans and the surrounding hills. Built to protect the town’s most valuable resource, the walls still define both the landscape and the story of the place.
A quiet Funky Tours moment is woven into the visit. Pause at the water’s edge for a simple oyster tasting, hosted by local producers from the nearby bay. Freshly harvested and enjoyed without ceremony, this is a direct connection to the sea and to families who have worked these waters for generations.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Local oyster tasting in Ston.
Enjoyed simply, standing by the water, shared with the people who harvest them, with no rush and no performance. Just the place and the moment.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Guided walking tour of Dubrovnik
– Free time to explore the city
Optional activities
– Day excursion to the Pelješac Peninsula and Korčula, including wine tasting
– Visit to Mljet National Park

In the morning, explore Dubrovnik’s old town with a local host who lives here and understands its daily rhythm. This walk is intentionally shaped as an introduction rather than an explanation, offering just enough context to help you find your bearings without trying to reveal everything at once
Moving through limestone streets and small squares, the focus stays on how Dubrovnik functions as a living city today. There is no rush to cover lists or dates. Instead, the aim is to notice the flow, understand the layout, and allow the atmosphere to settle naturally.
The afternoon is left open. Take the city slowly, return to places that caught your attention, step away from the crowds, or simply pause and observe Dubrovnik as it moves around you.
Later in the day, the group naturally comes back together. With your tour leader, drift slightly beyond the old town to a quieter spot, where a shared glass of wine and changing light mark a simple pause before evening.
Dinner is at leisure, on your own to have fun.
Did you know that The State of Dubrovnik was among the first countries to abolish the slave trade in the 15th century? Sometimes the best way to experience Dubrovnik is without a plan. Walk the back streets, step into small courtyards, pause in shaded squares and watch daily life unfold. Dubrovnik’s history is not only found in monuments, but in the rhythm of the city itself.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN DUBROVNIK
For a wider perspective, consider taking the cable car up Mount Srđ, just above the old town. From here, the city reveals itself in full, with the walls, rooftops and the sea unfolding far below. It is an easy way to step back from the crowds and understand Dubrovnik’s setting between land and water.
A short drive south of Dubrovnik leads to Kupari, a once-famous resort area left in ruins after the war. Today, the abandoned hotels and wide beach offer a stark contrast to the polished old town. The area is quiet, raw and reflective, and best explored with care and curiosity.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Transfer by private vehicle
Driving time
Approx. 4.5 hours
Leaving Dubrovnik, the road turns inland. The sea falls away quickly, replaced by stone, distance and quieter towns. The shift is immediate, both in landscape and in rhythm.
Crossing into Bosnia and Herzegovina, the country begins to explain itself without speeches. Place names change, road signs multiply, borders linger in ways that are still visible. Your tour leader reads the terrain as it comes, not as a lesson, but as lived reality.
The first stop is Trebinje, set low along the Trebišnjica River. At first glance, it feels calm and almost Mediterranean. Walking through the old town reveals more, a place shaped by shifting borders and everyday resilience. Stone streets, shaded squares and slow local routines give Trebinje its quiet confidence.
Trebinje is wine country. We stop at a local winery for a wine tasting, sampling regional varieties and spending time with producers who know this land better than anyone
From Trebinje, the road climbs into the mountains. Forests close in. Settlements thin out. The shift toward Tjentište and Sutjeska National Park is physical and emotional.
Rising from the landscape is the Sutjeska memorial, one of the most uncompromising World War II monuments in the former Yugoslavia. Isolated, monumental and deliberately stark, it offers no comfort. This is a place where history is not softened and silence does most of the work.
The drive continues north toward Sarajevo, through valleys and passes that have carried armies, civilians and stories for generations.
Arrival in Sarajevo is planned for the late afternoon. After check in, the evening is left intentionally open. Your tour leader will point you toward places for dinner, easing you into the city quietly, before Sarajevo reveals itself more fully over the days ahead.

EXPERIENCE THE BEST OF NIGHTLIFE IN SARAJEVO
Sarajevo is not a “nightclubs” city, but it is known for a handful of pubs, bars, and cafes that will meet the expectations of even the most demanding ones. Here are some of the best recommendations to start your night:
This is one of the most unique and authentic places in the old town of Sarajevo. It is officially called “Birtija, ” a convivial saloon visited mainly by locals. Every birtija should have its local special drink; at this place, it is visnjevaca – local cherry brandy.
Whether you are into cocktails, a glass of wine, or watching sports with friends, this place is ideal. In a cozy atmosphere, this tiny place serves some of the best wines and cocktails you can find in the city. Moreover, this is where you will feel like a home away from home.
This unique and impressive place is not just a bar; it is an attraction and a must while in Sarajevo. The decoration remains on an antique steampunk theme, and you won’t see many places in the world that include such a level of interior design. It would be best if you respected the site’s style, so do not expect some over-fancy service.
This is a paradise for beer lovers. It offers more than 120 types of beer, 15 of which are craft. Besides drinks, you can order some of the delicious snacks and dishes served on a special mat that will take you back to 1984. The bar is named after the mascot of the Winter Olympics and was created to reminisce about the golden age of Sarajevo.

What’s included today
– Breakfast, dinner
– Sarajevo Siege Tour, guided by a local who lived through the war
– Funky Tours Treat: food tasting and a home hosted dinner
Driving time
Approx. 1.5 hours by private vehicle
In the morning, attention turns to the Siege of Sarajevo and the breakup of Yugoslavia.
The day begins with a guided drive and walk through locations directly marked by the siege, led by a local guide who lived through the war as a soldier. The route follows the city’s terrain rather than a timeline, tracing how hills, roads and neighbourhoods shaped daily life under constant threat.
Passing through Sniper Alley, stopping at the former Holiday Inn and the Tunnel of Hope, and reaching viewpoints above the city, the story unfolds through place. These are not symbolic stops, but functional ones, showing how Sarajevo existed, moved and survived while under siege.
After lunch, the setting changes, but the context remains.
Walking through the old town and city centre reveals layers far older than the war itself. Mosques, synagogues, Orthodox and Catholic churches stand within a short distance of one another, not as monuments, but as part of the city’s everyday fabric.
The afternoon walk continues through Baščaršija and nearby streets at an unhurried pace, leaving room to observe present-day Sarajevo as it is lived now, shaped by everything that came before.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT

Počitelj Fortress visit
Funky Tours Treat: Lunch by the Buna River
Driving Time: Approx. 3 hrs

After breakfast, your familiar Funky Tours team picks you up and the journey south begins, heading into the Herzegovina region. The first stop is Konjic, a small town shaped by its rivers and mountains, known for one of the best-preserved Ottoman stone bridges in the country and a compact old bazaar that still carries everyday local life.
From Konjic, the road follows the Neretva River to Jablanica. Here, we pause at the site of the famous World War II Battle of the Neretva. Walking through the memorial area and across the pedestrian bridge above the river offers context to one of the region’s defining moments, where history and landscape are inseparably linked.
Continuing south, the scenery begins to shift. Herzegovina opens up into a striking mix of karst terrain, open valleys and water-carved landscapes.
The next stop is Počitelj, a fortified medieval town of stone houses, steep paths and towers rising above the Neretva River. Today, Počitelj feels part village, part open-air gallery, inviting a slow walk upward and wide views across the valley below.
From Počitelj, continue to the Kravice Waterfalls on the Trebižat River. Framed by lush greenery, the cascades offer a restorative pause in nature. Time here is unstructured, allowing space to walk, rest by the water or, in warmer months, enjoy a swim.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Lunch is served beside the Buna River, just below the Dervish House. Local specialties, including freshly prepared trout, are served in a calm riverside setting, with time to sit, eat and absorb the atmosphere. The meal unfolds naturally, shaped by the place rather than by occasion.

We shall reach Mostar in the late afternoon and take you to your centrally located hotel, where you can rest before we explore the city and its most important landmarks.
Being the place that naturally connects the Adriatic coastline and Bosnian hinterland, Mostar is a unique fusion of numerous different historical periods that staked their claim to the city and sculpted it in a way that it proudly stands on a throne of the cultural, historical, architectural and natural diversity of Balkans.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN MOSTAR
Later in the afternoon, those who wish can return to the Old Bridge area after the crowds have faded. With most shops closed and the streets quiet, the space changes completely. Sitting near the river with a drink, listening to the Neretva flow beneath the stone arch, offers one of Mostar’s most intimate moments. No schedule, no structure — just time and place.

The Partisan Cemetery, designed by Yugoslav architect Bogdan Bogdanović, lies above the city and is reached by a short uphill walk from the old town. Built in 1965, the memorial honors World War II victims from Mostar and stands as a powerful example of landscape architecture and collective memory. Quiet and rarely visited, it offers a different perspective on the city’s past and ideals that once shaped the region.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Boat ride in the Bay of Kotor (Perast)
– Visit to Our Lady of the Rocks
– Guided walking tour of Kotor
– Free time to explore Kotor
Optional activities
– Climb the city walls and fortress of St. John
Driving Time: Approx. 3 hrs
Leaving Mostar, the road turns south and soon crosses into Montenegro. The terrain softens, the air shifts, and the wide curves of the Bay of Kotor begin to replace the inland landscapes of the days before.
The first stop is Perast, a small baroque town set directly on the water, facing the narrow strait that leads into the bay. A short walk through the village introduces its seafaring past and the two islets that define the view: St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks.
From Perast, a short boat ride takes the group across the bay to Our Lady of the Rocks. Built gradually by local sailors, the islet reflects a long-standing relationship between the town and the sea. Time is reserved to explore the church and small museum before returning by boat to the shore.
Back in Perast, there is free time for lunch along the waterfront, before continuing further along the bay.
The route then follows the coast to Kotor. After settling into the hotel, the old town opens on foot with a local guide.
Inside the fortified walls, narrow stone streets, hidden squares and shaded passages reveal a city shaped by layers rather than eras. Roman foundations, Venetian rule and everyday modern life overlap naturally, framed by steep mountains above and the bay below. The walk is designed for orientation rather than explanation, leaving space to explore further on your own.
As the light begins to change, the pace slows. The rest of the day is left open. Your Funky Tours host is nearby to point you toward places to eat, drink or simply sit and take in Kotor’s atmosphere.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN KOTOR
Above the old town rises the Stone staircase to St. John’s Fortress. The climb rewards those willing to take it with sweeping views over Kotor, the bay and the surrounding mountains. The walk is best done early in the morning or later in the afternoon, especially during warmer months. The pace and timing are entirely flexible and fit naturally into your free time in Kotor.
The Maritime Museum of Montenegro in Kotor grew from the collection founded by the “Boka Marine” Fraternity around 1880. It opened to the public in 1900 – a great place to visit for history buffs and lovers of the maritime glory of Kotor.
Kotor’s affection for cats is no secret, and this small, informal museum embraces that relationship with charm. Located inside the old town, the Cats Museum displays a quirky collection of postcards, photographs and memorabilia, with proceeds supporting local animal care. A light, unexpected stop that reflects the everyday character of the city.

– Breakfast
– Skadar Lake National Park Boat Ride
– Lovćen National Park
– Guided walking tour of Budva
– Local Montenegro Wine Tasting
Driving Time: Approx. 3.45 hrs
After breakfast in Kotor, the route climbs quickly above the bay, following a series of mountain roads that open wide views back toward the water below. The ascent toward Lovćen National Park marks a clear shift from the coast into the country’s highland interior.
Stops along the way allow time to take in panoramic viewpoints above the Bay of Kotor, including the historic serpentine road toward Njeguši. There is an option to pause briefly in the village itself, known for its long tradition of smoked prosciutto and local produce.
At the top of Lovćen National Park, time is set aside near the Njegoš Mausoleum, where the scale of the landscape becomes fully apparent, stretching from mountains to sea. Lovćen is where Montenegro pulls away from the coast and looks inward, grounding the day before it opens back toward water again.
From Lovćen, the route descends toward Skadar Lake National Park.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Skadar Lake Boat Ride: A slow boat ride across Skadar Lake, moving through open water and reed-lined channels where the landscape feels largely untouched. Small monasteries sit quietly along the shoreline, reminders of how long life has followed the rhythms of the lake.
There is no rush and no commentary-heavy experience here. Just time on the water, space to observe, and a different pace from the mountain roads earlier in the day. A simple moment built into the route, allowing the lake to speak for itself.

During the boat ride, a small Funky Tours moment is built in. Enjoy a local Montenegrin wine tasting, shared simply on the water, without formality or presentation.
After disembarking near Rijeka Crnojevića, there is free time for lunch, with local fish specialties among the recommended options.
Later in the day, the journey continues back toward the coast and into Budva. Time is set aside to walk through the old town, where stone streets, Venetian walls and everyday life create a sharp contrast to the open landscapes of the interior.
The return to Kotor follows the coastline as the light softens. This day shows Montenegro in layers rather than highlights, moving between height, stillness and coastal life without ever rushing the experience.

Kruja holds a central place in Albanian history. Once the seat of the first Albanian state and closely linked to the legacy of Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu, the town combines strategic location with a strong sense of identity. Set within the fortress walls, the old bazaar remains one of the most preserved traditional markets in the country.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Cognac Skënderbeu at Kruje: A tasting of Skënderbeu cognac, named after Albania’s national hero, enjoyed inside the fortress walls where history is still present. It’s not a formal tasting and there’s no script. Just a strong local spirit, the setting it belongs to and a pause that anchors the visit in place, tradition and everyday Albanian life.

From Kruja, the route continues toward Tirana.
The capital reveals itself gradually. Loud, layered and unapologetically direct, Tirana wears its past openly while constantly reshaping itself.
A guided walk through the city centre offers orientation rather than a full explanation, focusing on how the city has evolved from Ottoman roots through communist isolation into its present-day energy.
Passing Skanderbeg Square, Ethem Bey Mosque, the Clock Tower, remnants of the communist period and contemporary architecture, the walk places Tirana’s contrasts into context without trying to resolve them.
After checking into the hotel, the rest of the day is left open. Your tour leader will share suggestions for where locals eat, gather and unwind, offering a first taste of Tirana through its everyday rhythms rather than its monuments.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN TIRANA
Mount Dajti rises just beyond the city, offering a quick escape from Tirana’s streets into forest and open views. A cable car ride lifts you above the city and into a quieter landscape, popular with locals for walking, slowing down and stepping briefly away from the capital’s intensity. Remnants of Albania’s military past are still scattered through the woods, quietly present rather than staged.
Hidden inside a former Cold War bunker, Bunk’Art 1 offers a raw and immersive look into Albania’s communist past. Underground corridors lead through exhibition spaces that mix history, art and architecture, including rooms used by Enver Hoxha himself. The visit is less about displays and more about scale and atmosphere, allowing the bunker to speak through its structure.
Once strictly off-limits to ordinary citizens, Blloku has transformed into Tirana’s most energetic district. Former political villas now sit alongside cafés, bars and everyday life. Walking through the area reveals how quickly the city has shifted, from isolation to openness, without trying to erase what came before.
As the day softens, locals head out for an xhiro. This evening walk is less about destination and more about presence. Streets fill with conversation, movement and familiar faces, creating a rhythm that defines everyday life in Tirana. Joining an xhiro is one of the simplest ways to feel part of the city rather than just pass through it.

What’s included today
– Breakfast
– Visit to Berat
– Visit to Durres
– Funky Tours Treat: Farewell
Driving Time: Approx. 4.45 h4rs
After breakfast in Tirana, the route heads south toward Berat, one of Albania’s most historically layered towns. Set above the Osum River, Berat has been continuously inhabited for centuries, with homes, churches and daily life still woven into its historic fabric.
The visit focuses on the old town and fortress area, where narrow streets climb toward the citadel. Walking through the castle reveals how history here is not preserved behind glass, but lived in real time. Houses remain occupied, courtyards open casually toward the views below, and layers of religious and cultural influence overlap naturally.
Time is taken to explore key sites within the fortress, including religious monuments and museum spaces that provide context without breaking the flow of the visit.
Before returning to Tirana, the route briefly stops in Durrës. Known today for its coastline, the city also holds one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the Balkans, located directly within the modern urban centre.
A short visit offers a stark contrast between ancient scale and present-day life, allowing space to understand how deep history remains embedded in Albania’s cities.
As evening arrives, the group gathers again around the table, no longer as fellow travellers but as people who have now shared sixteen full days on the road.
The mood is easy, satisfied and unmistakably good. Plates are passed around, glasses keep finding their way back up, and conversations overlap. Stories from the journey surface naturally, mixed with laughter, future travel plans and the familiar comfort that comes from having spent real time together.
FUNKY TOURS FINALE
FAREWELL DINNER: This isn’t a goodbye dinner. It feels more like a checkpoint. A moment that confirms the journey worked. Faces around the table are relaxed, open, and surrounded by people who, not long ago, were strangers and now feel oddly familiar.
Some stay late, others peel off earlier, but the feeling is the same. The trip doesn’t end here, it simply pauses. With the quiet understanding that paths will cross again, somewhere down the road.
You are allowed . No endings. Just a strong final night, shared among people who didn’t arrive as a group, but became one.

What a wonderful tour!
As part of the group of six friends traveling in October 2025 (mentioned in another recent October review), we traveled to seven countries with Funky Tours and greatly enjoyed the trip.
Our guide Stefan and driver Ermin are wonderful, engaging professionals who anticipated and solved problems before we realized there were any.
CEO Ema had designed a thoughtful approach to the tour that Stefan further tailored for us, addressing our various interests in recent and ancient history, archaeology, nature, and heritage.
Our local guides were insightful and we especially benefited from hearing the perspectives of several who lived through the war years.
We were lodged comfortably in 4-star hotels, and the size of our Opel Vivaro van made for quick processing at borders (compared to that for larger tour vehicles).
October was a beautiful time to travel – with the linden, birch, and maple trees in their autumn colors, the trip from Montenegro into Kosovo was spectacular. A boat trip on Lake Skadar was also a highlight.
The tour was very reasonably priced, and we highly recommend Funky Tours if you’re interested in traveling through the Balkans.
The Best of the Balkans with Funky Tours
For three weeks in October 2025 six friends traveled through eight countries in the Balkans.
Funky Tours exceeded our expectations in all areas — planning, hotel choice, facilitating tours, experienced tour guides in each city, highlighting heritage, history and culture and sharing special meals at times.
We could not have been more pleased. When we asked for experts on history, especially connected to the Jews of the Balkans, Funky Tours provided guides with specific knowledge who showed us sites, religious and otherwise where the people lived, thrived and ultimately suffered.
The tour to Srebenica and Sarajevo were particularly poignant and educational, giving us an understanding about the 1990s war and the genocide that happened there.
Added to historical information were the fun boat rides, views of canyons and valleys, food demonstrations and challenging explorations of castles, fortresses and bunkers.
As senior citizens, all world travelers, Funky Tours was sensitive to our needs at all times and our guide and driver throughout were the best I’ve ever had.
The tour was so reasonably priced we blinked when we got the estimate for the whole tour including hotels, entrance fees and guides, all breakfasts and some lunches and dinners.
For anyone wanted to explore the Balkans and to learn about the region’s fascinating history I would most highly recommend Funky Tours.
Funky Tours is Totally Fantastic!!!
The support staff in the office are super friendly, knowledgeable, helpful, and responsive.
They custom designed our tour where we met a group a few days in, and left a few days before it was over, and FT organized every transfer seamlessly. If you’re going to the Balkans, go with Funky tours!
Understanding the Balkans
I had long wondered about the Balkans, having heard news about the region throughout the ’90s.
This tour helped me better understand the different cultures, histories, religions, terrain and climates that were combined by Tito in the ’40s.
The people we encountered on this tour were all so kind, and willing to share their (varying) perspectives on what their land(s) had endured, and what it meant to them.
Funky Tours, and our guide Ajla, did a superb job of making the trip both fun and educational, exposing us to such a wide range of foods, wines, places and personal histories.
The old towns of Dubrovnik, Kotor, Mostar, Split and Zagreb were very charming with their old walls and streets. Sarajevo, by contrast, was very stark, showing the wounds from the conflicts of the 90’s. The vast countryside we passed through was striking and diverse, giving more comprehension of the context of the Balkans.
Finally, Ajla managed to create a group atmosphere that made the trip with 10 people a shared experience with diverse and interesting people, who are all now our friends.
16 day small group tour of 5 Balkan countries
We loved our Funky Tours experience in Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, and Albania. Our small group of 12 consisted of people from all over the world and was a pleasure to travel with. Ajla, our tour leader, was organized, professional, kind, funny, and a wealth of knowledge about the region. When we arrived at each capital city, we learned about the history and culture in a walking tour with a local guide, then enjoyed free time with suggestions from our guides. The tour brought us to many off beat small villages that enriched our experience of each country. We also enjoyed easy hikes through some stunning national parks. We came away with a deeper understanding of the historical and political turmoil of this region and the courage and endurance of the people who survived the terrible warfare of the 1990’s and now welcome visitors warmly. I highly recommend Funky Tours for an unforgettable Balkans experience.
