Herzegovina is the missing link between Sarajevo and the Adriatic. This trip is designed for travellers moving between Sarajevo and Dubrovnik or Kotor, who want the journey itself to be part of the experience.
Travelling through Herzegovina adds context to both ends of the journey, helping you understand not just where you are going, but what lies between. It is the region where the landscapes change most dramatically, where rivers shape entire towns, and where history is layered rather than linear.
The route is travelled from Sarajevo toward Dubrovnik or Kotor, but it works just as naturally in reverse. You can start in Sarajevo and finish on the coast, or begin in Dubrovnik or Kotor and travel inland to Sarajevo.
The itinerary, stops, and experiences remain the same, only the direction changes. The feeling changes slightly, but the depth does not.
Over two days, the journey follows a carefully curated route through Herzegovina, a region where rivers, stone landscapes, layered history, and everyday life intersect. Instead of choosing the fastest road, this itinerary follows the route that adds context, meaning, and rhythm to the journey.
Day one connects Sarajevo with Konjic, Jablanica, Blagaj, and Mostar, introducing Herzegovina gradually through riverside towns, lived-in history, and places that feel authentic rather than arranged. An overnight stay in Mostar allows time to experience the city beyond the daytime crowds, when it feels more intimate and unforced.
Day two continues toward the Adriatic coast, passing through Počitelj, Kravice Waterfalls, Radimlja Necropolis (UNESCO), and Vjetrenica Cave (UNESCO) before reaching Dubrovnik or Kotor. Each stop adds something the next one cannot, moving between open landscapes and hidden worlds.
This itinerary is ideal for travellers who value substance over shortcuts, atmosphere over speed, and journeys shaped by intention rather than convenience. It turns a necessary connection into a meaningful experience and often becomes the part of the trip people talk about most.
Whether you travel from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik, from Sarajevo to Kotor, from Dubrovnik to Sarajevo, or from Kotor to Sarajevo, this route offers the best possible way to connect these places.
The order may change.
The substance does not.

After breakfast, the journey leaves Sarajevo and heads south into Herzegovina, following a route where geography does more of the talking than signposts ever could. This is not a simple drive between cities, but a carefully chosen transition, from the Bosnian interior toward a region shaped by stone, water, and light.
The change happens gradually. Forested hills soften into bare rock, the valleys widen, and the pace of the day naturally slows. Herzegovina announces itself quietly, without spectacle, which is exactly how it prefers to be met.
The first stop is Konjic, a small riverside town framed by mountains and anchored by its elegant Ottoman stone bridge. A short walk through the old town offers a glimpse into everyday life unfolding without performance or polish.
Konjic is not here to impress. It is here to ground the day, to set a tone before the landscape begins to carry more weight.
From Konjic, the road follows the emerald ribbon of the Neretva River toward Jablanica. The river shapes everything here, the terrain, the settlements, and the stories tied to them.
A brief stop at the site associated with the World War II Battle of the Neretva marks a moment of pause. Not for detail or explanation, but because this is a place where history and landscape are inseparable, and passing through without stopping would feel incomplete.
Continuing south, the journey leads to Blagaj, where the tone shifts again. Tucked beneath a dramatic cliff, the Dervish House (Tekke) sits at the very source of the Buna River.
Built in the 16th century, this Sufi monastery has remained a place of spiritual practice and continuity for centuries, shaped as much by belief as by its natural surroundings.
Beside the tekke, the Buna River emerges directly from the rock. Clear, cold, and powerful, the spring defines the atmosphere of Blagaj. This is not a place that asks for attention. It simply slows people down. Voices soften, movements become smaller, and time stretches in ways that rarely need explanation.
Lunch is enjoyed beside the Buna River, just below the Dervish House. It is an intentionally unhurried moment in the day, shaped more by the sound of flowing water than by the clock. Plans tend to loosen somewhere between the first bite and the realisation that nobody is checking the time. We consider this a success.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Lunch in Blagaj
Lunch is served along the river, in the shade and within sight of the Buna spring. It is designed to slow the rhythm of the day rather than fill it. If the group lingers longer than planned, that is not a problem. It is very much the point.

By late afternoon, the road delivers us into Mostar. After checking into the centrally located hotel, there is time to rest before heading out to explore the city and its most important landmarks.
Positioned between the Adriatic coast and the Bosnian hinterland, Mostar has long been a place where routes converge.
Its streets, architecture, and riverbanks carry layers of influence built over centuries, each one still visible, none of them fully erased. After a day shaped by landscape, Mostar brings the focus back to people, stories, and intersections.
WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN MOSTAR
Later in the afternoon, those who wish can return to the Old Bridge area after the crowds have faded. With most shops closed and the streets quiet, the space changes completely. Sitting near the river with a drink, listening to the Neretva flow beneath the stone arch, offers one of Mostar’s most intimate moments. No schedule, no structure – just time and place.

The Partisan Cemetery, designed by Yugoslav architect Bogdan Bogdanović, lies above the city and is reached by a short uphill walk from the old town. Built in 1965, the memorial honors World War II victims from Mostar and stands as a powerful example of landscape architecture and collective memory. Quiet and rarely visited, it offers a different perspective on the city’s past and ideals that once shaped the region.

After breakfast, we leave Mostar and continue south through Herzegovina, travelling toward the Adriatic coast.
If the first day eased you into the region, today gently pulls back the curtain on what usually stays hidden, sometimes underground, sometimes just off the main road.
At first, the landscape feels open and uncomplicated. Wide fields, low hills, long stretches where it seems like nothing much is happening. That impression rarely lasts long in Herzegovina.
Our first stop is Počitelj, a fortified stone town rising above the Neretva River. Built directly into the hillside, its houses, mosque, and clock tower form a compact and remarkably intact whole.
A short uphill walk reveals sweeping views over the valley and the quiet logic of the place. Počitelj isn’t about cafés, souvenirs, or rushing from one viewpoint to another.
It’s about slowing down, noticing details, and enjoying the rare pleasure of a place that hasn’t tried too hard to impress anyone.
From Počitelj, the journey continues toward Kravice Waterfalls, one of Herzegovina’s best-known natural sights.
Here, the Trebižat River spreads into a wide cascade of water, greenery, and mist. In warmer months, there is time to swim or cool off; at any time of year, Kravice has a reliable effect.
Most people arrive curious. Most leave noticeably more relaxed. We consider this excellent planning rather than coincidence.
The day then takes a quieter turn at Radimlja Necropolis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Stolac. Set in an open landscape, medieval stećci tombstones lie scattered across the field, carved with symbols that have puzzled historians for centuries.
There is no single explanation offered here, and none is expected. Radimlja is best explored slowly, allowing space for reflection, curiosity, and the occasional “what do you think this means?” moment.

The final inland stop is Vjetrenica Cave, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest, most important cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Stepping inside feels immediate and physical. The temperature drops, the sound changes, and the outside world fades away.
Underground chambers, rock formations, and hidden passages reveal a side of Herzegovina that most travellers never see. Quiet, ancient, and unexpectedly fascinating, it’s the kind of place that makes you forget what time it is. We promise to remind you.
By late afternoon, the route turns toward the coast. The landscape softens, the light shifts, and the Adriatic Sea announces itself well before it comes into view.
Arrival in Dubrovnik or Kotor is planned for the early evening, with drop-off at your preferred location.
After two days shaped by rivers, stone, and layers of history, the city feels less like a dramatic finale and more like a natural next chapter. If an earlier arrival is preferred, the day can always be adjusted.

Great Experience: Split to Dubrovnik Transfer Tour
In June 2025, we (a group of 8) took Funky’s ‘Split to Dubrovnik Transfer’ tour from Split to Dubrovnik.
The trip included a drive with stops from Split to Sarajevo, two nights and two tours in Sarajevo, and a drive with stops from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. The trip was both interesting and insightful.
The stops we made along the way highlighted some of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The countryside in BiH surprised us with its beauty: mountainous, very green and forested in the north, and more Mediterranean in the south – rocky with lots of scrub brush.
Our drivers/tour guides: Adnan (from Split to Sarajevo), Emin and Edo in Sarajevo, and Andar (from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik) were outstanding. Each guide explained the history of each area that we visited and/or passed through, and included much of his personal history and observations about the various areas, particularly the war years in the 1990s, as well as the current state of politics and government in BiH. T
he vans used by the drivers were large and comfortable and easily accomodated the 8 of us, our driver, and all of our luggage.
The four star hotel Funky provided in Sarajevo – Colors Inn – was excellent: great location, large and comfortable rooms, outstanding staff, and a very generous buffet breakfast.
All for a surprisingly reasonable price.
I would also like to acknowledge the administrative staff we worked with at Funky Tours: Edna and Eldin. Edna arranged our booking and patiently worked with us as our tour group increased from 4 to 6 to 8 people. Eldin helped us work with our driver from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik to ensure that we would arrive in Dubrovnik on time for a group dinner.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in BiH.
Excellent experience, excellent staff all around, thank you Funky Tours!
All round excellent
The best tour company I have struck in many years of traveling. Accomodating, super efficient, and knowledgeable. They went out of their way to adapt the tour to suit us. Hotel was first rate, guides likewise
Best way to travel between Sarajevo and Dubrovnik
My husband and I used Funky Tours for a private transport tour from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik – staying the night in Mostar.
In fact we had booked a group tour but no one else showed up so we got the benefit of a private tour for the price of a group tour which was a great bonus.
Our guide Merima and our driver were both excellent. We saw so much along the way though a highlight for us was Tito’s Bunker which was fascinating. But we also enjoyed the Blagaj Dervish House and the Kravice Falls.
The scenery was just stunning! Merima told us a lot about the history, geography and politics of the region – as well as her personal story which added to the experience.
After spending the night in Mostar, she also gave us a great walking tour of the city the next morning. She took us to great restaurants for lunch on both days – the most amazing fresh fish right next to the rivers where it was caught.
It was also great to have locals help navigate crossing the border into Croatia. I would highly recommend this way of travelling between Sarajevo and Dubrovnik.
I’d also add that Funky Tours was so easy to work with for planning the tour through email exchanges.
Highly recommend
As a family of 4 ( including one teenager) we very much enjoyed this day tour from Sarajevo. We travelled as s small group (8 people) in an air conditioned mini bus- there was not so much walking so it was a good days rest ! Also the scenery was just so beautiful and stunning.
Our guides ( including the driver) were punctual, friendly polite and very knowledgeable. They were a good team.
The regular stops were appreciated and suggestions for clean toilets even more appreciated .
The amount of time at each stop was sufficient- given how popular the stops were, and we had enough time to swim at the waterfalls and for a relaxing lunch.
Amazing tour from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik
I booked the transfer tour from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik and absolutely loved it! Ajdn our driver and Dorris our tour guide were amazing from start to finish.
Very helpful and informative. We got to see everything on the itinerary and at the end safely reached Dubrovnik with Ajdn’s professional driving. Thankyou once again to you both highly recommend this duo for your next tour!
