>Short briefing over the morning breakfast before we head towards the Bobotov Kuk
One of the highest points of Montenegro, Bobotov Kuk can be reached from various sides, but the most convenient, easiest and our choice of the day, will be access from the southern side.
The first part of the morning will be short, 14km ride from Žabljak to the “prijevoj Sedlo” (pass Saddle). Sedlo is located at an altitude of cca 1900m, and is the start of the hiking trail to Bobotov Kuk.
>Sedlo pass at Durmitor National Park
As soon as we leave our vehicle and gear up, we are ready to start the hike. At a normal pace, the morning ascent will be 3.30 hours long, with a trail taking us via beautiful plains and mighty peaks of Durmitor to the glorious Bobotov Kuk peak.
The trail will take us via Surutka valley and Zeleni vir, until we reach just under the final sharp ascent to the Bobotov Kuk.
>Beginning of the trail towards Bobotov Kuk is ideal for some relaxed photoshoot – Durmitor National Park
Special Note: The last part of the ascent (20min) to Bobotov Kuk peak is quite steep and requires use of hands. At points part of the trail is secured with cables which come handy when climbing. In case you have vertigo this part of the trail should not be climbed.
>On the way to Bobotov Kuk overlooking stunning Škrčka Lakes – Durmitor National Park
During the hike, panoramic views, valleys, powerful peaks of Durmitor and its glacial lakes, light adrenaline, beautiful storytelling, legends, and everything that this adventure brings, will be one of the best experiences of life.
>At the last meters of ascent to Bobotov Kuk or the first meters of descent you have to bypass other mountaineers – Durmitor National Park
Once at the top, we have gained a bit over 700m in altitude difference. This kind of altitude gain, on average inclination of 24% during a bit over 5.5km hike, is considered high-moderate to challenging activity and is doable by anyone of normal fitness level.
The views of Škrčka Jezera and the Prutaš peak are absolutely the best from the Bobotov Kuk region.
>View towards Škrčka Lakes from Durmitor National Park
At the top, all the efforts will be highly rewarding. Stunning 360 panorama views from Bobotov Kuk, with special emphasis on peak Prutaš, Škrčka lakes and stunning Šareni pasovi (colorful layers), will surely make all the pain go away.
>Peak of Bobotov Kuk at 2525m with 360 panorama views to beautiful surroundings and Škrčka Lakes
At the very top we will take a short break to enjoy the beautiful panoramas and to bite some snacks, because we will spend a lot of energy climbing up. Be aware that you will need at least 1.5l of water during the hike and a few locations to refill.
>At the top of Bobotov Kuk, at 2525m which is highest peak of Durmitor National Park
For the returning hike we have two options. The first one is the same way we came, making it a returning round trip. If we choose to return the same way, we should be back to Sedlo around 3-4 PM, and to Žabljak 30 min after that.
>Slowly going back towards Žabljak from Bobotov Kuk peak
However, for hikers with higher physical condition, the recommended way back to Žabljak is via Black Lake with a visit to a beautiful “Ledena Pećina” (ice cave), located at an altitude of 2164m.
As the name suggests, with an annual temperature of 0°C, the cave retains snow and ice all year round, creating unusual ice shapes of various stalactites and stalagmites. Short stop at the cave, to admire the beauty of its ice creations is a must.
>Ice cave at Durmitor National Park
The returning hike from Bobotov Kuk to the Black Lake and to Žabljak will take us additional 4 to 5 hours, depending on how much photos and rest we take.
The total hike for the longer trail will be around 14.5km and some 6-7 hours of active walking. We should be back to Žabljak at 6pm.
If we opt for a 2nd option, it means we shall have rather late lunch, so it is recommended that during the day you have several, carbohydrates rich, high quality snacks and at least 1.5 to 2l of water.
>The returning trail via Ice cave towards Black Lake to Zabljak
Once back to Žabljak, get ready for the most delicious lunch of your lifetime. A beautiful mix of traditional Montenegrin, organic food will be served.
The best way to introduce Durmitor cuisine is to try the food made by the local organic producers, and Funky Tours bring you the best of it.
Trying Montenegrin mountain side dishes such as “cicvara” (traditional dish made from milk, cheese, cream (kajmak) and flour), “kačamak” (or polenta, famous dish prepared usually from corn flour, served with yoghurt, cheese and kajmak) and variety of “japraci” (grinded beef meat with spices rolled and boiled into vine leaves or layers of onion), are always a good choice.
One of the most famous specialties of the Durmitor region is lamb meat. If you opt slowly cooked and then baked, or alternatively slowly cooked in milk, the taste will simply blow you away.
After the lunch we are saying goodbye until your next adventure with Funky Tours.
