Itinerary

  • DAY 1: (Sarajevo > Sutjeska NP Hiking > Tara River Rafting Camp)

This tour will begin with transfer from Sarajevo to Tjentište, via Eastern Bosnia regions.

    • STOP 1: Tjentište

As soon as we depart from Sarajevo ride will take us toward eastern, beautiful and very mountainous parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina, towards regions of Foča and Tjentište. After roughly 2 hours ride we shall arrive to Tjentište which is our first entrance point to the National Park Sutjeska.

Tjentište is famous WW2 Sutjeska Battle memorial, very meaningful for the general story of Yugoslavia, which is surely unmissable topic to anyone travelling Balkans, and the topic we’ll be discussing a lot during this two days program. The last 45 min of the ride will take us up the gravel road (cca 17 km) through the heart of Sutjeska’s National Park untouched nature regions, where we will reach start point of our hiking trail, spot called Prijevor at 1668 m.a.s.l. From there we shall have stunning views over the three mountains of Maglić, Zelengora and Volujak.

On the way to Prijevor, we will make short stop at one of the amazing viewpoints to observe Skakavac waterfall at Perućica primeval forrest (one of the last ones preserved in Europe).

    • STOP 2: Trnovačko Lake

At Prijevor, we shall leave our transportation and start 2.30 hour medium hike, which will take us through very beautiful regions of the national park and its amazing nature, where finally around lunch time.

Trnovačko lake is nested underneath the mountain Maglić which is Bosnian highest mountain peak, bordering Bosnia and Montenegro. Trnovačko lake is actually located in Montenegro, but is only accessible as a hiking trail from Bosnian side, through Sutjeska National Park.

Once at the lake, you will be given free time to explore the lake, while your guides will take time to prepare lunch. During the hot summer months lake is perfect for swimming too.

After the delicious lunch and free time on your own to explore the region, we shall start our hike back. Again after some three hours we shall arrive to Prijevor, and then will take ride back to Tjentište.

    • STOP 3: Tjentište WW2 Memorial
Sutjeska National Park Tjentiste Memorial for the WW2 Battle for Sutjeska
Sutjeska National Park Tjentiste Memorial for the WW2 Battle for Sutjeska

The last stop before return to Sarajevo would be “Battle of Sutjeska” WW2 memorial at Tjentište. It commemorates the fighters and fallen soldiers of the Battle of the Sutjeska, which took place from May 15th to June 16th, 1943.

We shall learn some glorious WW2 stories and admire to Tito’s partisans efforts to keep these regions of Yugoslavia and Bosnia free from Nazi-Ustase-Chetniks occupation.

    • STOP 4: “Divlja Rijeka” Tara River Rafting Camp (check-in & overnight)

Last ride of the day is transfer from Tjentište to our amazing overnight rafting camp – Divlja Rijeka (eng.Wild River).

Evening hours are planned for some free relax time with local music, local dinner by the campfire, while over the drinks you will be meeting up the crew members and guest you will be sharing your rafting boats with, the following day.

Accommodation is planned in simple and clean (private or shared) bungalows with shared bathrooms, made on the very edge of river Tara banks.

  • DAY 2: (Tara River Rafting > Return to Sarajevo)

Morning hours are planned for delicious breakfast and amazing tranquil moments by the green Tara river.

    • STOP 5: Tara River White Water Rafting (4/5h)

As soon as you get the full rafting equipment, we shall start our 45 min ride through canyon of river Tara to the starting point of the rafting.

The Tara River cuts the Tara River Canyon, the deepest canyon in Europe and second deepest in the world after Grand Canyon, at 78 kilometers in length and 1,300 meters at its deepest. The canyon is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The following roughly 4/5 hours are planned for the most amazing white water rafting of your life.

Depending on the season, Tara river ranges from III+ to IV on the scale of difficulty. Naturally the most adrenaline pumped period is period of spring (April and May) when water levels are at its highest points, and as we approach summer and autumn water level drops, making Tara ideal rafting destination for anyone regardless of your fitness level.

During the day we shall make few stops for cold drinks, will do some great fun on the clean, drinkable Tara river, will take down few rock for jumps, and overall you will get to experience the best white water rafting can offer.

    • STOP 6: Lunch and Transfer back to Sarajevo

In the afternoon when rafting is finished, at our rafting camp we shall have well deserved local lunch and after some free relaxing time, will go back to Sarajevo, where arrival is planned in the later evening.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. When to book this tour?
Best period for this package is between April and October.
During the period of later November until late March this package is not the best option due to large amounts of snow and hiking trails being hardly accessible, and Tara river being at high levels.
  2. Is this tour suitable for families with children
Yes this tour is perfect for families with children. Intensity of hiking is medium and kids would simply love it. Rafting is suitable for all ages. Minimum age recommended is 5.
  3. Can I book as solo traveller?
Yes you can. Significant number of our fellow travelers are solo.
  4. Can I do two day hiking instead of rafting?
Alternative option could be overnight camping (picture above) by the Trnovačko lake for guests not interested into rafting, but who prefer more mountain experiences. Next day easy relax time by the lake or if weather permits full day of hiking (higher level) to Bosnian highest mountain of Maglić (from Trnovacko lake 1535 masl to Maglić at 2386 masl).
  5. How much should I tip?
Tips are not included in the tour costs, nor they are heavily expected in Bosnian culture. However when you receive excellent service, we recommend tipping.
