Itinerary

West Mostar

Divided as Berlin used to be, but without obvious physical borders, Mostar is a city where the imaginary walls occupy people’s minds separating this unique gem into Croatian and Bosnian part.

Western part of Mostar is a part belonging to a Croatian majority and its vibrant streets will drag us into the historical whirlpool of Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian Empires, the Yugoslav Utopia and the total eclipse of human mind resulting in siege and the bloodshed in the 90s.

Mostar Bell Tower
We will meet in the West part of Mostar, just in front of the Catholic Church and Franciscan Monastery known for its massive Mostar Peace Tower which gained a great significance by being on the former war line of separation during the Mostar siege between 92-95. This will be a good start of the comprehensive experience and feeling the pulse of city that desperately seeks for reconciliation.

Nice and easy walk will guide us through some of the most crucial locations which will help us understand the needs and stories this city is urging to tell:

  • Partisan cemetery: Cream crop of Yugoslav brutalist architecture consisting of cenotaphs built in an honour of the partisan victims of WWII.
  • Cathedral of Mary, Mother of the Church: One the four Roman Catholic cathedrals in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Yugoslavian ambitious postmodern and innovative architectural project.
  • Nikola Šubić Zrinski Street: One of the most beautiful promenade in the country. This, former Lenin Street, is stretching from the Spanish Square to the Square of Croatian Nobles.
  • Mostar Gymnasium: School under the auspices of the two separate secondary school systems. Its monumental style bears an incredible resemblance with the Sarajevo City Hall.
  • Sniper Tower: Impressive, abandoned and bullet-riddled concrete tower overlooking the entire city. After the war, building became a way of an expression for many graffiti artists.
  • Mostar boulevard: Street that was meant to connect the old town with its modern centre, overnight became a no go zone and a war frontline.
  • Mostar City Hall: a place where we will try to understand the reasons why democratic society allowed this city to remain silent and having no local elections since 2008 till 2021.
Mostar ruins
Numerous buildings still stand demolished, especially at the eastern city bank and alongside Boulevard street, the war dividing line between warring sides. In the photo, we see the present condition of the University library building, situated next to the renovated Mostar gymnasium.
East Mostar

From modernisation to captivating tradition and “Bosniak” side of the city. The story of East Mostar begins with the beautifully preserved Ottoman bazaar and an abundance of millhouse restaurants, craft shops and trinket sellers twinkling across the gushing Neretva.

Old town of Mostar is known for being carpeted with its glittering pastel rainbow cobblestones densely packed with wide open shops, preserved houses and verandas, and domes of mosques and minarets.

Mostar
The old bridge is a symbol of human tendency and capability of creating something so magnificent that will for centuries serve as a strong bond between the two sides, but also a showcase of how human stupidity and recklessness can destroy it within a single day.

We will take a stroll in cobblestone labyrinth of the UNESCO protected historical centre of Mostar, and visit the symbols of the coexistence of communities from diverse backgrounds:

  • Kriva Cuprija bridge (Crooked bridge): Bridge which was built as a miniature “test model” 8 years before the Old Bridge of Mostar erected.
  • Old Bridge: Symbol of the city of Mostar. It was built between 1557 and 1566 upon the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent. The bridge was destroyed in 1993, during the Mostar siege.
  • Bosnaseum Museum: Bustling Coppersmith’s Streets will guide us to Bosnaseum Museum which will recreate for us Mostar’s vibrant past from its Ottoman period all through the war in the 90s.
  • Koski Mehmet-Pasha Mosque: The most strikingly beautiful Herzegovinian Mosque. Mosque is a place where you can actually climb one of the minarets for a spectacular view of the Old Town.
  • Kajtaz Home: stroll through Maršal Tito Street will guide us to amazingly preserved Ottoman house with serene courtyard and inside chambers filled with the original artefacts.
Next thing on our agenda will be a lunch break and treating our palates with the finest of local food whose forms create a permanent ode to traditional Bosnian cuisine.

Hum

As soon as you put your foot in Mostar, you will notice you are being followed by the hill towering the city and a big Roman Catholic Cross which, with its massiveness, serves its purpose in attracting the attention no matter which part of the city you currently are.

Mostar Hum
Hum Hill is known for the The Millennium Cross, a Roman Catholic cross erected as a symbol of two thousand years of Christianity. The cross is, symbolically, 33 meters high and is visible from every part of Mostar.

During a cca 20 min drive through the Herzegovinian karst we will replace the pastel rainbow of cobblestones with the incredible views reaching into the depths of Herzegovina and stretching all the way to incredible mountains Prenj, Čvrsnica and Velež, the old giant and silent Mostar guardian.

Due to its strategic importance during the 90s, Hum Hill is nowadays bordering with surrounding land mines, negative emotions and still present tension between the two sides of the city.

Fortica Hill

Half an hour drive through narrow roads hugged by the expanse of green valleys and amazing views will take us to Fortica Hill. This is a place where east meets west, a place that belongs everybody and nobody.

Mostar Fortica
About 35 meters long and 15 meters high above the slopes, Fortica skywalk will provide absolutely amazing views over the entire city of Mostar. This is a perfect place to admire the hypnotising playfulness of vibrant sunset colours.

Nowadays, Fortica Hill represents a heaven for anyone into outdoor activities such as via ferrata, cycling, paragliding, hiking or enjoying the adrenaline rush while taking the longest zip line in the country.

Grasped by nature and sunset colours, we will take a skywalk on 35m long platform towering the city of Mostar and enjoy a drink embracing Mostar as a symbol of reconciliation of cultural, traditional, ethnic and religious differences.

Those of you who would like to try out in some of the Fortica outdoor activities please check our Opt. extras and contact our team.
