Many travellers exploring the Croatian coast do not realise that just a few hours inland lies one of Europe’s most culturally layered countries.
Bosnia and Herzegovina sits just beyond the Adriatic mountains, where landscapes, architecture and everyday life shift in ways that often surprise even experienced travellers.
This 3-day, 2-night small-group journey connects Split with Dubrovnik or Kotor, transforming what might otherwise be a simple transfer into a meaningful exploration of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The route follows historic corridors shaped by rivers, trade routes and centuries of cultural exchange across the Balkans. Medieval towns, Ottoman bridges, Austro-Hungarian streets and dramatic mountain landscapes appear naturally along the way, allowing the country to reveal itself gradually rather than as a collection of isolated attractions.
At the heart of the journey lies Sarajevo, the cultural centre of Bosnia and Herzegovina and one of Europe’s most historically layered cities. With two nights in the city, travellers have time to experience Sarajevo beyond a brief stop, exploring its historic quarters, everyday life and the stories that continue to shape the country today.
As the route continues south into Herzegovina, the atmosphere shifts once again. The landscape opens into wide karst valleys and powerful rivers, while historic towns such as Mostar, Blagaj and Počitelj reflect centuries of cultural exchange between East and West.
By the time the journey reaches Dubrovnik or Kotor, travellers have not simply crossed a border. They have moved through a region where cultures, empires and landscapes have intersected for centuries.
What begins as a practical transfer between destinations gradually becomes something far more meaningful: a deeper understanding of the Balkans and the contrasts that define it.
Accommodation throughout the journey includes carefully selected 4★ hotels, chosen for their location, reliability and atmosphere rather than branding.
Transport is private throughout the journey, allowing the itinerary to remain flexible and comfortable while travelling across borders and landscapes.
Meals take place in family-run restaurants, local taverns and regional settings, where food and wine are part of everyday life rather than staged experiences.
History along the route is explained by local experts who live here, many of whom personally experienced the region’s recent past. Stories are direct, conversations are open and complexity is never simplified.
This journey is designed and operated entirely in-house by Funky Tours, delivered by the same local team that accompanies travellers throughout the experience.

What’s included today
– Transfers in private vehicle
– Jajce fort and catacombs entrance fee
– Travnik fort
Driving Time: Approx. 4.5 – 5 hrs
Optional Activity: Visit to Visoko Valley of Bosnian Pyramids
Leaving the Adriatic hinterland behind, the road gradually climbs into the mountainous landscapes of Central Bosnia, a region where rivers carve deep valleys and historic towns appear unexpectedly between forested hills.
The first stop is Jajce, one of the most distinctive historic towns in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the centre of the town lies the Pliva Waterfall, one of the few waterfalls in the world located directly in the heart of a city. Here the Pliva River meets the Vrbas River in one of the country’s most recognisable natural settings.
After time to admire the waterfall, the exploration continues with a walking tour through Jajce’s historic core. Highlights include the Jajce Citadel, offering wide views across the valley and surrounding hills, the medieval Tower of St. Luke, the unique Jajce Catacombs, and the AVNOJ Museum, the site where the foundations of modern Yugoslavia were established during the Second World War.
Just a few kilometres outside town, the landscape opens toward the Pliva Lakes. At the edge of the Small Pliva Lake stand the historic Pliva Watermills, locally known as Mlinčići. These traditional wooden mills once played an important role in the region’s rural economy and later became one of the most recognisable images of Bosnia and Herzegovina during the Austro-Hungarian period.

Travnik is famous for its medieval fortress, colourful Ottoman architecture and the beautiful Plava Voda spring, where clear mountain water flows beneath centuries-old trees. The town is also the birthplace of Ivo Andrić, Nobel Prize–winning author of The Bridge on the Drina.
A short stop at Plava Voda offers time to slow down with traditional Bosnian coffee, while those interested can try local specialties such as Travnik ćevapi or the region’s well-known Travnik white cheese.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Travnik ćevapi
No visit to Travnik would be complete without tasting its most famous local specialty. As a small Funky Tours treat, we stop at one of the traditional ćevabdžinicas in town to enjoy authentic Travnik ćevapi, served fresh in warm somun bread and often accompanied by the region’s well known Travnik white cheese.
Simple, local and incredibly tasty, this short stop offers a perfect opportunity to experience one of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s most beloved dishes in the place where it is best known.
From Travnik, the road continues east through the hills of Central Bosnia before descending toward Sarajevo, where Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and Yugoslav history meet within a single valley.
Arrival in Sarajevo is expected in the evening.

4hrs Sarajevo Total Siege Tour (guided by a local who lived through the war)
The morning begins in Sarajevo’s historic centre, where the city’s long and complex history is visible within just a few streets.
Walking through Baščaršija, the old Ottoman bazaar founded in the 15th century, reveals a place where traditions and daily life still intertwine. Narrow stone streets lead past copper workshops, small mosques, traditional bakeries and lively cafés, while the scent of fresh bread and Bosnian coffee fills the air.
Sarajevo has long been known as a meeting point of cultures and religions. Within a short walking distance stand mosques, synagogues, Orthodox and Catholic churches, reflecting centuries of coexistence that shaped the city’s identity.
The walk continues through both the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian parts of the city centre, revealing how different empires and historical periods left their mark on Sarajevo’s architecture, streets and atmosphere.
Along the way, there will be several stops to try small local specialties as part of a relaxed food tasting experience. From traditional pastries to Bosnian coffee, these flavours offer another window into everyday Sarajevo life.
The rest of the afternoon is free to explore the city at your own pace or simply enjoy Sarajevo’s café culture.
Sarajevo Total Siege Tour
For those interested in understanding the events of the 1990s war in greater depth, an optional Sarajevo Siege Tour is available in the afternoon.
Led by a local guide who experienced the siege first-hand, the tour follows the physical geography of the city rather than a strict timeline, helping visitors understand how Sarajevo functioned during nearly four years under siege.
The route includes Sniper Alley, the former Holiday Inn, viewpoints above the city and the Tunnel of Hope, the underground passage that once connected the besieged city with the outside world.
These locations are not visited as symbols, but as places that played a real role in everyday survival during the siege.
The tour provides important historical context while allowing visitors to better understand how the events of the 1990s continue to shape Sarajevo today.

Destination: Dubrovnik (Croatia) or Kotor (Montenegro)
Accommodation:
Not included
Inclusions:
– Breakfast
– Funky Tours Treat: Lunch by the Buna River
– Blagaj Dervish House (Tekke) entrance
– Kravice Waterfalls entrance
– Počitelj Fortress visi
Driving Time: Approx. 4.5 hrs
After breakfast, the journey south begins, heading into the Herzegovina region.
The first stop is Konjic, a small town set between mountains and the Neretva River, known for its well-preserved Ottoman stone bridge and compact old bazaar where everyday local life continues much as it has for generations.
From Konjic, the road follows the Neretva River toward Jablanica. Here we pause at the site of the famous World War II Battle of the Neretva, one of the most significant battles fought in Yugoslavia during the war. Walking through the memorial area and across the pedestrian bridge above the river provides context to the events that shaped the region’s history.
As the road continues south, the landscape begins to open up. The mountains soften into wider valleys and the distinct karst terrain of Herzegovina starts to appear.
By midday the journey reaches Mostar, one of the most iconic cities in the Balkans. For centuries, Mostar has stood at the crossroads between the Adriatic coast and the Bosnian interior, shaped by trade routes, empires and cultural exchange.
A guided walking tour introduces the historic centre and the famous Stari Most (Old Bridge), the elegant stone arch that has become a symbol of the city. Walking through the cobbled streets of the old bazaar reveals a mix of Ottoman architecture, artisan workshops and lively cafés overlooking the Neretva River.
After the tour, there is some free time to explore the old town independently, enjoy a traditional Bosnian coffee or simply take in the views of the bridge and river below.
A short drive then leads to the nearby village of Blagaj, dramatically located at the source of the Buna River beneath towering limestone cliffs. Beside the turquoise spring stands the famous Blagaj Tekke (Dervish House), a 16th-century monastery built directly into the rock.
FUNKY TOURS TREAT
Lunch is served beside the Buna River, just below the Dervish House. Local specialties, including freshly prepared trout, are served in a calm riverside setting, with time to sit, eat and absorb the atmosphere. The meal unfolds naturally, shaped by the place rather than by occasion.

After lunch, the journey continues to Počitelj, a fortified medieval town rising above the Neretva River. With its stone houses, narrow paths and hillside towers, Počitelj feels like an open-air museum shaped by centuries of Ottoman and Mediterranean influences.
A short walk through the village reveals impressive views across the valley below.
The final stop of the day is Kravice Waterfalls on the Trebižat River. Surrounded by lush greenery, the cascades form a natural amphitheatre of water and stone. Depending on the season, visitors can walk along the riverbanks, relax beside the waterfalls or enjoy a swim in the clear pools below.
In the late afternoon, the journey continues toward the Adriatic coast.
Arrival in Dubrovnik or Kotor is expected in the early evening, where you will be dropped off at your accommodation.
The journey connects Split or Zagreb with Dubrovnik or Kotor and can operate in either direction. Did a number of tours with Funky Tours in Bosnia in September
Cant recommend them highly enough. Excellent local guides and drivers were very well organised and considerate and took us to beautiful and fascinating places well off the normal tourist trail. As local guides they provided very clear and empathetic explantaions of the history and current situation of the places we were visiting
Funky Tours is awesome
Last month, we had a private group tour to Sarajevo (3 days, 2 nights) starting in Split and finishing in Dubrovnik. The whole experience was terrific. Each guide was knowledgeable, engaging and really committed to us having a great experience. We saw and learned so much. The days were packed with sightseeing, stories and history. Funky Tours also arranged a gift for my brother and sister-in-law who were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Terrific service. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!
In June 2025, we (a group of 8) took Funky’s ‘Split to Dubrovnik Transfer’ tour from Split to Dubrovnik
The trip included a drive with stops from Split to Sarajevo, two nights and two tours in Sarajevo, and a drive with stops from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik. The trip was both interesting and insightful. The stops we made along the way highlighted some of the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The countryside in BiH surprised us with its beauty: mountainous, very green and forested in the north, and more Mediterranean in the south – rocky with lots of scrub brush. Our drivers/tour guides: Adnan (from Split to Sarajevo), Emin and Edo in Sarajevo, and Andar (from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik) were outstanding. Each guide explained the history of each area that we visited and/or passed through, and included much of his personal history and observations about the various areas, particularly the war years in the 1990s, as well as the current state of politics and government in BiH. The vans used by the drivers were large and comfortable and easily accomodated the 8 of us, our driver, and all of our luggage. The four star hotel Funky provided in Sarajevo – Colors Inn – was excellent: great location, large and comfortable rooms, outstanding staff, and a very generous buffet breakfast. All for a surprisingly reasonable price. I would also like to acknowledge the administrative staff we worked with at Funky Tours: Edna and Eldin. Edna arranged our booking and patiently worked with us as our tour group increased from 4 to 6 to 8 people. Eldin helped us work with our driver from Sarajevo to Dubrovnik to ensure that we would arrive in Dubrovnik on time for a group dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in BiH. Excellent experience, excellent staff all around, thank you Funky Tours!
Best week in Bosnia
Our vacation began in Split, Croatia. I contacted Funky Tours, let them know what we would like to see and Bosnia and our budget. From there, Funky Tours did the rest.
They picked us up from Split on a Monday, and kept us busy with amazing sights and tours the entire week and returned us back to Split the following Friday.
We were able to see amazing sights and experiences across the country. They made the trip stress free and handled everything. The guides were amazing. They were all extremely knowledgeable and passionate about sharing their country with us. If planning to visit Bosnia, I highly recommend Funky Tours.
They are extremely responsive, friendly and helpful with everything. I’ll certainly use them again my next visit.
We highly recommend Funky tours! its a 6 out of 5 stars for us!!!
Our group has decided to stitch together a few tours with Funky which spanned 3D2N and the tours have been nothing but spectacular.
The guides on these tours have been helpful and approachable.
They have gone way and beyond to explain the sights and answered numerous questions from the group.
Knowledgeable guides who are passionate and considerate to the needs of the guests. We have learnt alot about the history, culture and social issues of BIH and have definitely grown to love BIH as one of our favourite countries in the world!
A huge shout-out and heartfelt thanks to our guides – Enis, Tarik, Mustafa, and driver, Senad, you guys are the most wonderful bunch of people we have met in the balkans! Hope to see you guys again in the future!
