Morning: After we leave Zagreb and head towards Plitvice National Park. The journey towards Plitvice will take us some two hours. The optional stop is available at Croatian Homeland War Museum.

From 1991 to 1995, Croatia waged its own Homeland War in the last decade of the previous century. It was the bloodiest conflict in post-World War II Europe, with massive ramifications for infrastructure and society. The Turanj area served as Karlovac’s last line of defense during the 1990s Homeland War. In the museum, housed in a facility that the Croatian defenders called “Hotel California,” we will learn much about the region’s rich history and see firsthand what equipment was utilized to protect Karlovac and Croatia.

Rastoke is known for its well-preserved mills and the picturesque waterfalls along the Slunjčica River, which flows into the Korana River at this place. The Korana River originates at Plitvice Lakes National Park, meaning at Rastoke, similar natural phenomena are occurring as at the Plitvice Lakes.

Mid-day: In the early afternoon, we visit UNESCO world heritage, amazing Plitvice Lakes National Park. At Plitvice, we will admire nature’s most impressive wonders made of water, limestone, green forest, and much much more.

The waters flowing over the limestone and chalk have deposited travertine barriers over thousands of years, creating natural dams, creating a series of beautiful lakes, caves, and waterfalls. These geological processes continue today.

We’ll walk around the park, do a few boat rides, learn more about the place, and, most importantly, enjoy nature as much as possible. A visit to Plitvice Lakes is totally flexible according to your wishes and physical possibilities. The tour of the visit to the lakes can last from 3 to 5 or even 6 hours, and we offer you maximum flexibility.

Afternoon:After a stunning visit to Plitvice Lakes, we shall pay a visit to the attractive Željava Air Base.

After soaking in the natural wonders of Plitvice Lakes, embark on a unique adventure to Željava Air Base. This former top-secret military facility, nestled within the mountainous terrain, offers a captivating glimpse into Yugoslavia’s Cold War history. Explore underground tunnels, once bustling with activity, and witness the remnants of a bygone era. Stand in awe of the colossal entrance carved into the mountainside. Željava‘s mystique and historical significance make it a must-visit destination, adding a fascinating layer to your journey through Croatia.

Later afternoon, we shall depart towards Split, where we expect to be by 7 or 8 pm.

In Blagaj, we will have a lunch break just next to the river and enjoy the tastes of the local dishes embraced by the amazingly serene nature setting.

After lunch, we will enter the world of mystical Sufi life and explore the Blagaj Tekke, Dervish House representing an authentic, unique sacral-residential example of Islamic architecture.

FUNKY TOURS TREAT

Lunch in Blagaj, a true “wow” moment: Enjoy a flavorful lunch featuring fresh local trout, perfectly complemented by a glass of the famous Herzegovinian wines, Žilavka or Blatina. All of this while taking in the stunning views of the Buna River and the historic Dervish monastery. Whether you’re a meat lover, vegetarian, or vegan, we have options that make this riverside lunch a perfect blend of tradition, taste, and breathtaking scenery. It’s a moment that will leave you with memories as vibrant as the landscape around you.

Afternoon: We shall reach Mostar in the late afternoon and take you to your centrally located hotel, where you can rest before we explore the city and its most important landmarks.

Being the place that naturally connects the Adriatic coastline and Bosnian hinterland, Mostar is a unique fusion of numerous different historical periods that staked their claim to the city and sculpted it in a way that it proudly stands on a throne of the cultural, historical, architectural and natural diversity of Balkans.

Once you are ready and fully energized, we will start exploring the city and follow its stories and legends of east and west lurking over each corner of charming narrow streets and cobblestone passages.

Evening: We will end the Mostar adventure at the Unesco-protected Old Bridge and let you feel the pulse of the city on your own.

WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN MOSTAR

  • “Private” evening time by the Old Bridge

One of the most inspiring moments in Mostar is having a drink of your choice at beaches just under the bridge, at very late evening hours. During the day, Mostar’s old town area is extremely crowded and busy, while in the late evenings, when most of the shops and cafes around Mostar are closed, spend a “private” time with the bridge, listening to the sound of Neretva river will be one of those awe-inspiring moments of your Balkan travels.

  • Visit Mostar Partisan Cemetery

The Partisan Cemetery of Cenotaphs (symbolic graves), a masterwork of renowned Yugoslavian architect Bogdan Bogdanovic, finished in 1965, as a memorial to the partisan victims of WW2 in Mostar, beautifully displays all features of complex architectural, aesthetic, and landscape design. Being a unique monument of the urban scale of the city of Mostar, with great ambient value, this cemetery serves as a monument of Yugoslav solidarity. Cemetery is a 20-25min walk from the Old Bridge area and is easily reachable using Google Maps. There is no entrance fee.

DAY 10: Visit Perast and Kotor (MNE)

Destination:Mostar / Kotor, Montenegro
Inclusions:4* Hotel Vardar (or similar) | Meals: Breakfast | Perast Boat Ride | Our Lady of The Rocks | Kotor Walking Tour
Driving Time:3.30hrs | Private Vehicle

Kotor Old town Montenegro

Morning: After a delicious breakfast and some free time in the morning, we will leave Mostar and explore the best of Montenegro, the beautiful region of Kotor Bay.

As soon as we cross the border, the first point of the morning visit is the beautiful Perast. Perast is a baroque village in the municipality of Kotor with its two stunning islets: Sveti Djordje (St. George) as a natural one and Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks) as an artificial one. Historically crucial for its naval history, Perast strategically stands opposite the only water entrance to Kotor Bay.

After a pleasant short walk through Perast village, we are ready to take a short boat ride to the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks. In the middle of the 15th century, on the 22nd of July 1453, when two brothers found an icon on a rock (“škrpjela”) in the water as a sign of gratitude, the locals of Perast built an islet; by increasing the surface of the islet by pouring stones and sinking old sailing ships.

Today, the islet with its church, beautiful frescoes, and a small museum is one of the biggest attractions of the Bay of Kotor. This two-way boat ride and islet explorations will take us around one hour.

Lunch: Once we return to Perast, we shall take a break and let you have an amazingly tasty lunch at one of the local restaurants at your choice.

Afternoon: In the early afternoon, we arrive in Kotor, the most popular place on the beautiful Montenegrin coast, located in the Bay of Kotor.

The first plan is to check our accommodation, leave our things, and start a detailed exploration of the old part of Kotor with a local guide. A walking tour of Kotor will take us via hidden cobble-stoned streets, giving us an opportunity for an in-depth understanding of Kotor’s history and cultural background.

In the present day, originating from the Venetian era but mentioned initially during the Roman era as a strategic position on the Adriatic sea, the Kotor has been through many ups and downs throughout its nearly two millennia-long history. Since Romans, followed by Illyirians, Slavs, Hungarians, Serbian, Venetians, French, Austrians, Yugoslavians, and today finally part of modern Montenegro, the Kotor has seen many empires passing by while leaving part of their history engraved within heavily fortified walls of Kotor.

Learning specifics about the past and presence of Kotor while admiring the narrow stone streets, stone churches, stone walls, high mountains above, small windows with drying laundry, a ton of cats, hidden bars and cafes, and so much more, is a great way to experience UNESCO heritage of Kotor town.

Evening: On your own. Your Funky Tours Host will provide you with all the amazing recommendations on locations to chase for some good time during your evening free time in Kotor.

WHEN YOU HAVE FREE TIME IN KOTOR

  • Hike the Kotor Fortress

The famous Saint John’s Fortress, or Castle of San Giovanni, just above the low ground of Kotor, is the number one thing to do in Kotor. We recommend this experience in the early morning or late afternoon during your free time in Kotor. The most recommended time is early morning to avoid significant heat and sun getting directly to your camera while taking photos. For romantics, the late afternoon during the sunset is also very recommended. The regular time to climb the top is 45min, and 30min to come down. For the majority of people, this experience lasts around 2hrs.

  • Maritime Museum of Kotor

The Maritime Museum of Montenegro in Kotor grew from the collection founded by the “Boka Marine” Fraternity around 1880. It opened to the public in 1900—a great place to visit for history buffs and lovers of the maritime glory of Kotor.

  • Cathedral of Saint Tryphon (Kotor Cathedral)

St Tryphon Cathedral is a Romanesque-style church that dates to 1166 and was built on the site of the church dating to 809. It is one of two Roman Catholic cathedrals in Montenegro and houses the relics of St. Tryphon, the city’s patron saint and protector. As it is one of the most popular things to see in Kotor, we heavily recommend a visit.

My small group of 3 used Funky Tours for ~10-12 days for a trip through the Balkans. We did a combination of 1/2 day tours and connecting tours that included Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo.
Our group was myself and 2 18y/o’s celebrating their high school graduation. We had an amazing time thanks to Funky Tours. We interacted with many of Funky Tours staff, Skender (even his parents), Ema (who did such a great job at answering all my emails and helping to arrange the perfect tour for us), multiple different guides (who were all very professional and knowledgeable.) We spent the most time with Jasmin and Enis.

The girls were suitably impressed by Jasmin’s excellent driving skills and ability to parallel park a van in a small space. Enis was always up to answering our questions, occasionally using his excellent photography skills to help me take pictures of the girls (we took graduation photos at most of our stops) and a pleasure to have as a guide.

I highly recommend Funky Tours and will use them again if

I am in the Balkan region again.

Holiday of a lifetime – can’t recommend funky tours enough!

I can’t put into words how much I enjoyed our trip with Funky Tours and I can’t recommend them enough!

My husband and I did a two-week four country trip through Croatia/Bosnia and Hercegovina/Montenegro and Albania and had a ball.

Anand and Senad were THE best guide and driver and it felt like taking a trip with friends. They couldn’t do enough for us and were knowledgable and engaging giving a personal perspective about a multi-layered part of the world. Ema, Edna and Nadirah in the office couldn’t be more helpful, checking in to see if we were OK or wanted anything changing.

Where necessary local guides were used who were all engaging, informative and critically had lived through history and events they were speaking about.

We tweaked the itinerary as we went along to make sure it suited us perfectly and the flexibility and amount of things to see and do meant we felt Funky Tours gave us a holiday of a lifetime!

Fantastic Balkan 10 days with Sarajevo Funky Tour

Ema organized my trip B&H, Montenegro, Albania in November 2020. Her communication was timely. What I like most about Ema and her team is they addressed my concerns about traveling during the pandemic. They took care all the PCR test to ensure smooth border crossing. We all wore masks and tested negative before starting our car journey together. I want to thank to Taib (guide) for making my trip magical and memorable. Taib is knowledgeable, good communication skills, detail oriented.

I am glad I made the choice to go with Sarajevo Funky Tour.

Best Agency to Experience the Balkan Region!

Sarajevo Funky Tours is hands down the best travel agency I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From the initial booking inquiry months in advance to the ride to the airport on my last day, everyone that I met with the Sarajevo Funky Tours team was delightful to be around. What sets this agency apart from the others is that their guides and staff know what it means to balance professionalism and building friendships with their guests. For the 8 days I spent touring with Funky Tours, all of the guides, drivers, and staff went above and beyond to check in with how I was doing throughout my stay — and as a solo female traveler in a brand new county, that meant the world to me. I will always recommend this agency because of the time, effort, and care they put into breaking down prejudice — and cannot wait to explore more of the Balkan Region with their team the next time I visit! Puno Ljubavi!
