Activity Note: This program is designed to be suitable for children aged 10 and over, and anyone with a normal level of fitness, without any rock climbing experience or white water canoeing – rafting.
During the summer and autumn the recommended time to start from Sarajevo is 7 AM since the summer heats in Herzegovina region can be quite high even during the morning hours.
We are happy to meet you at our office or pick you up at your address and let the adventure begin. The two-hour drive from Sarajevo to Blagaj, which is the starting point of our via ferrata adventure, will be an experience in itself, as most of the ride takes place through the valley and canyon of the Neretva River, which itself offers amazing scenery and panorama views.
The Blagaj ferrata “Vulin potok” is located near the source of the river Buna, as the largest karst source in Europe. The source itself is a home to a dervish tekke dating from the 15th century. The very top of the cliff, at a height of more than 200m above the Buna source is a home to the medieval fortress of Herceg Stjepan Kosaca, which dates from the XV century.
As soon as we arrive at the site we are ready to take climbing equipment and soar to the heights of the Herzegovinian karst.
The program includes high-quality climbing equipment with a helmet and a climbing harness with an absorbent kit for Via Ferrata, and an experienced professional guide who will give you all the necessary climbing instructions and who will be your ears and eyes during this fascinating adventure.
Important Note At Funky Tours we pay significant attention to the selection of local climbing guides. They know the local history, traditions, legends, and are happy to share their story, meaning they are the true Herzegovinians. However, what we consider probably the most importants asset in a given scenario, is the local experience of climbing. Our local climbing guide is the one who has experienced this rock so many times, knows all the “dangerous or risky parts”, has witnessed all kinds of situations, or what usually we say: “Zna svaku stijenu!” (eng. knows every rock). Finally, at Funky Tours we love supporting the local economy too.
With a trail length of some 6km, a height difference of 370m, and physical difficulty: 2/10 and technical difficulty: 4/10 this ferrata is adapted for ages 10 and older (with the presence or consent of parents) and for all adults with normal physical fitness. Vertical climbing sections range from 5 to 30m and the total duration of the adventure is about 3 hours.
The via ferrata trail goes through the dried-up course of a river “Vulin potok” that has left behind incredible geo-morphological formations, which will simply leave you speechless at all times.
At the very top of the ferrata is the famous location Rebro, which is also a climbing attraction.
The final stop of the climbing part of the day is a visit to the medieval fortress of Herceg Stjepan Kosača, which dates from the 15th century. With high walls and beautiful 360 panoramas that stretch to the valley of the river Buna, this will be a great end to the first part of the day.
After we unloaded the equipment and concluded the climbing part of the day, we are moving on. Our journey continues by driving towards the small Herzegovinian town, Čapljina, where an unforgettable canoeing experience awaits us.
The river Trebižat is one of the most beautiful rivers in Herzegovina. With a length of 51 kilometers, Trebižat is considered to be the only karst river in Europe that sinks and springs again as many as 9 times. This stunning river with 9 names, of turquoise clean and clear water, of winding course and easy rapids, you will get to know best if you decide to do a canoe safari, an activity adjusted for absolutely everyone.
The water temperature in the summer months is around 20 °C, making it excellent for those sensitive to temperature differences.
During the trip you will have the opportunity to see many fish and birds of different species as well as beautiful travertine waterfalls, and the perfect harmony of the river and the untouched nature that surrounds it.
Important Note This canoeing adventure on the river Trebižat is great for families with small children.
Each canoe can be ridden by two persons, and canoeing techniques will be taught effortlessly by our local skipper and guide.
The basic equipment for a canoe safari consists of a paddle and life vest. For those who are more sensitive to the temperatures, we can provide a neoprene suit and neoprene shoes. During the summer, we absolutely recommend only a bathing suit because the water and the outside temperature are warm enough that you will not feel the cold in any case.
The length of the trail is about 8 kilometers and the total section is crossed in about 3 to 4 hours, depending on the amount of breaks or if you are opting for swimming, jumping, high power rowing, etc.
At the end of the canoeing adventure, we have a homemade, traditional Herzegovinian lunch. The most popular dishes in Herzegovina are usually prepared under “sač” or famous “peka”. So our plan for the day is to focus on the combination of meat and vegetables with homemade bread and salad. Along with the food we serve homemade juices, drinks, coffee and dessert. If you’re a vegetarian, don’t worry, we always have great solutions that don’t include meat and meat products.
At the very end of the day, we suggest chilling along the river Trebižat and having fun on the local beaches at one of the riverside beach bars. Few drinks by the Trebižat river to sum up a great day is a must have. Return to Sarajevo is planned in the later afternoon hours.
However, if you want to maximize your Herzegovina day, we can extend the later afternoon hours by visiting the beautiful Kravica waterfalls and / or visiting Mostar with a walking tour of the UNESCO site of the Old Bridge and the Old Town of Mostar.
