Morača Canyon

Although overshadowed by the beauty and grandeur of the famous Tara River Canyon in the north, the Morača River Canyon is the second largest canyon in Montenegro. It is characterized by steep, in some parts vertical shores, and in some parts exceeds the height of 1000m.

The part of the canyon that we pass on the way to the Biograd National Park offers beautiful views of the canyon and the green river Morača, and is definitely an unavoidable part of this unique tour. Few stops such as Suspension bridge and Platije to admire the stunning scenery of Morača canyon are a must see.

Moraca Canyon Montenegro

>Morača is a river that has created one of the most beautiful canyons in Montenegro, which separates the Morača Mountains from the wreath of Sinjajevina.

Morača Monastery

One of the most beautiful medieval Orthodox monasteries in Montenegro is the Morača Monastery. It was originally built by Stefan Vukanovic from the Nemanjić dynasty in 1252, but throughout history it has experienced a couple of destructions, the most significant of which is that of 1505 by the Ottomans. In its present form it was reconstructed in 1580.

If there is any monastery in Montenegro that has a special significance for Catholics, then it is the one in Morača. Namely, in 1648, a council was held in this monastery, at which the bishops of the Peć Patriarchate (later the Serbian Orthodox Church) accepted church unity with the Catholic Church. Orthodox historians call the Morača convocation an “unionist”, since there is no more important church unifying event in the history of church unions in the area than the council in Morača.

At Morača monastery we shall have a half an hour stop to explore this beautiful pearl of Serbian Orthodox history in Montenegro.

Moraca Monastery - Montenegro

>The Morača Monastery is one of the most important in the history of the Serbian people, and its church is a top achievement of Serbian architecture of the 13th century.

Biograd Lake National Park

In 1878, when local fraternities and tribes donated this area, of the present day National Park Biogradska Gora, to the then master of Montenegro – Prince Nikola, who declared this pearl of nature a “princes ban”, it marked the beginning of the state protection of this region.

Proclaimed as a national park in 1952, and known for its wide biodiversity, with 7 glacial lakes, the most famous of which is Lake Biograd, archaeological sites, rich flora and fauna, cultural heritage, Biogradska Gora National Park is one of the most beautiful locations in Montenegro.

Educational and easy 1 hour hiking trail around the lake through one of three only remaining European rainforests, with coffee break at the local cafe is the best way to explore this gem of Central Montenegro.

Biogradsko Jezero at Biogradska Gora National Park in Montenegro

>Based at an altitude of 1094 m above sea level, Biograd Lake is the largest glacial lake in the Biogradska gora National Park.

Bjelasica Mountain

The green meadows of the Bjelasica mountain, at an altitude of 1800m, are home to the Eco Katun Vranjak. “Katun”, meaning summer pasture, originated in the tradition and life of Montenegrin mountaineers several centuries ago.

Katun Vranjak at Bjelasica mountain - Biogradska Gora National Park - Montenegro

>Bjelasica is one of the most beautiful mountains in Montenegro! It is of volcanic origin, which conditioned its relief with many mild, undulating surfaces, with its highest peaks rounded and grassy, without sharp rocks, and easily accessible.

Today it is a place where you can try local food, rent accommodation, ride horses, walk beautiful hiking trails, get to know first hand the tradition and culture of the highlanders of Montenegro.

In the beautiful nature of the Bjelasica mountain we are planning a traditional Montenegrin lunch, trying the delicious local specialties.

After lunch you have free time to explore Katun Vranjak on your own, or walk through the beautiful meadows of the Bjelasica mountain.

Kolašin

The last point of today’s tour is a one-hour tour and free time for a walk around Kolasin, the most famous ski resort in Montenegro.

Kolasin is a city founded by the Ottomans in the 17th century, and is located at 954m above sea level, and as such represents an exceptional base for exploring this part of Montenegro. Short walking tour will cover the most important parts of the Kolašin, including Upper and Lower Town Squares, Partisan memorial, and other locations of interest within the main part of Kolašin.

Return to Podgorica is in the later afternoon hours. If you return to Kotor bay region, return will be in the late evening hours.

Amazing tour and Montenegrin Experience with Funky Tours!!

We were a group of 4 in mid twenties and did two different day tours with this company.

The first day was as advertised on their website and went to Skadar Lake, Lipa Caves, Lovcen National Park, Rejiska, Centinje and the second was a customized tour to Durmitor National Park, Tara Bridge, Biogradska National Park and Moraca Canyon/Monastery.

Before we arrived in the country, the organization and communication was great and we found it easy to book tours and they were flexible and catered to our needs and what we wanted to see by making customized tours just for us.

Both tours themselves were absolutely fantastic. They were a perfect blend of different types of activities and allowed us to see nearly all of Montenegro in just a short space of time.

The company were also flexible with pickup and drop off in different cities to allow us to see all areas.

The guides (Skender, Ana and Slavko) were both a great blend of informative and fun. They were extremely knowledgeable about the country and the areas we visited and we learnt so much about the wonderful country.

We will definitely be booking with funky tours again when we travel to Bosnia/Serbia in the future.

The Funky Tours team was absolutely excellent!

Great people to spend the day with.

Each taxi, host or guide they set us up with spoke great English and was very personable.

We spent 5 nights in Bosnia. Funky Tours set up everything for us. Our only major responsibility was to wake up and make it to the van, everything else into the evening was taken care of.

A very memorable trip.
