If you are starting this tour from Sarajevo (Mostar as a starting point is an option too), the morning ride will take us to one of the most beautiful towns in Herzegovina – Konjic.
With its stunning Old Bridge looming over the turquoise Neretva river and unique old town, both dating from the Ottoman period, exploring this small town at the crossroad of Bosnia and Herzegovina is a great way to start a day.
As soon as we pass Konjic and leave the last of its civilization traces behind us, the amazing Prenj wilderness will open ahead of us. Next roughly 45min ride via old gravel road to Tisovica valley will be a constant pleasure of joy and admiration of the giant’s massive beauty.
Beautiful panoramas over the Neretva valley, cliffs of all depths, stunning natural diversity of endemic plants such as Bosnian pine (Pinus heldreichii lat.) or Black pine (Pinus nigra lat.) and other, will simply make our ride through the hearth of Prenj mountain one of the day highlights.
The road ends at Tisovica valley – the valley that was formed during the Ice age by the glacier just under the highest peak of Prenj mountain, Zelena Glava (2155m).
Rich with Bosnian pine and highlands game, 5km long at an altitude of 1200 to 1500m, this unique valley simply captivates with its wilderness and beauty.
If there is one spot in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where one can experience wilderness and tameness, scree and fertile humus, rocky desert and alpine pastures, juniper and noble Bosnian pine, hot Herzegovinian karst and cold mountain spring, traces of chamois or bear, violet, Bosnian lily and eelgrass, grazing cows, flocks of sheep and their guardian – Tornjak (Bosnian sheepdog), shepherds and mountaineers, wild horses, jeeps and Himalayan tents, people longing for the peace of God, and at the same time cheering mountaineering gatherings – then this is a place, the valley of Tisovica.
At Tisovica we leave our transport and start our hike. During the next two to three hours the medium demanding trail will take us through the very nucleus of the Prenj mountain offering us beautiful scenery and gorgeous panoramas.
Once we arrive under the Zelena Glava cliff, the next hour will be a steep climb, at places using ferrata until we are at the top. Once at the very top at 2155m, the 360 panoramas offering views on all Bosnian and Herzegovinian mountains, and even wider, will be simply worth all the effort. Many of the eleven Prenj peaks with an altitude of over 2000m, will be visible in front of us.
The very peak is overgrown with juniper so that is how it got the name – Green Head (bos. Zelena glava).
At Zelena glava we will have picnic lunch break, enjoy our time even more, admiring the nature wonders with lessons of Herzegovinian geomorphology.
Later, slowly we ll pack our stuff, write our names in the “peak book” and start our descent, towards Tisovica valley.
Next two hours of relaxed return, your mind will be overwhelmed with different views and experiences for which Prenj carries the name of the most beautiful Bosnian and Herzegovinian mountain.
Return to Sarajevo or Mostar, depending on the option you booked, will be in the later afternoon.
