Pickup Locations If you are staying in the old town of Sarajevo, meet us at our office. If you are a bit away from us, please let us know, and we can organize advance pickup.
Activity Note: The tour is adapted to all ages and is medium demanding. Due to the distance of the location, we use vehicles during the tour to reach the starting hiking point, and the rest of the tour is on foot through breathtaking natural surroundings.
Meet our team at the office or at your preferred pickup location. This tour will begin with a 1.15-hour transfer from Sarajevo to Umoljani village across Bjelašnica Olympic Mountain. Your guide is an adventurous and knowledgeable enthusiast who will introduce you to all of the Bjelašnica beauty. He will make sure no questions remain unanswered, even of a personal nature, so don’t refrain from sharing your thoughts and opinions at any moment in time.
At Umoljani village, we shall leave our car and explore the village’s most important sites, such as Studeni Potok (Cold Creek), Stoned Dragon – Ažbaha – the legend of the birth of Umoljani. We will shortly visit Umoljani Mosque and learn the story of Sarajevo Haggadah.
The first part of the Umoljani to Lukomir village trail will be a 3.30-hour hike. The trail will take us from a starting point of roughly 1275 meters (Umoljani) across the peak of Obalj at around 1896 meters.
On the way, we will pass by the old Gradina settlement, which is believed to date from the Illyrian period. During the ascent, you will enjoy amazing scenery, especially the Studeni Potok (Cold Creek) panorama.
At the top of Obalj, Rakitnica Canyon and the mountains of Treskavica, Visocica, and the peak of Bjelašnica mountain, with numerous small villages in the distance, will be simply stunning.
After some rest and full-time body and spirit enjoyment, we are ready to hike down to Lukomir village at an altitude of 1500, which will be a “one of a kind” story as well.
Please note that depending on the time of the year, we can get lucky to have fields of blueberries, rosehip, certain types of mushrooms, thyme, or other plant species around us, free to pick up.
Lukomir – in the language of locals, “harbour of peace”, is a village that dates at least 600 years ago and where most of the century-old traditions have been kept alive until today.
It is the only remaining semi-nomadic traditional mountain village in Bosnia and Herzegovina
As soon as we arrive at the village, we will have a locally prepared lunch, meet some of the local people, learn about their customs, and enjoy the best Bosnian coffee.
Later, we will visit the village mosque, see more Stećci tombstones, climb the Vijenac peak, and admire the stunning 800 m-deep Rakitnica canyon. Here, mother nature is at its best.
After Lukomir village explorations, it is time to start hiking back.
After exploring Lukomir village, the return hike will mainly be a pleasant 2.30h hour flat hike to Umoljani village through the Canyon of Rakitnica River.
Rakitnica Canyon is probably the most remote and unexplored canyon. With a length of 26km, it separates the massif of Bjelašnica and Visočica, and without a doubt, it is the longest canyon in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Firstly explored in 1956, until today very few people have walked the full length of it, as in some parts it can be over 800 meters high and only 1 meter wide, making it very hardly accessible.
The trail we will take will be on the upper edge of the canyon so that you can see and feel the “magnificence” of this place.
Return to Umoljani should be around 5 pm, and arrival back to Sarajevo around 6.15 pm.
What Do I Need to Bring?
Great experience-would highly recommend
Thank you to our wonderful guide Elvira who took us on this hiking tour to Lukomir: a beautiful, traditional mountain village along a spectacular canyon. Nice lunch potato pie) at a restaurant in the village.
A hike to remember
The hike to Lukomir is more difficult than stated. Sturdy hiking boots and poles are helpful.
If you are an inexperienced hiker this may not be the trip for you. If you are, you will see the most gorgeous views.
Our guide Harm was a delight and our group bonded over the hours together. We never made it to the back 9 km of the hike because it took hours to do the first 10 km.
With that said, I am delighted to have done the hike and would recommend it only to people that understand that the hike is physically grueling at times.
Also thought we were having lunch with the Nomads and would learn about their customs.
This was not the case we ate at their restaurant. They could not have been more gracious.
Outstanding local tour excursions agency
Funky Tours was outstanding. Website provided so much inspiration that we decided to visit Sarajevo for one and a half weeks (instead of just for the weekend). Pre-arrival their bookings team organised an online meeting so we could talk through different options & arrange a schedule.
Sarajevo is full of remarkable history & culture so take Funky Tours Free Walking Tour of the City. There are others you can do including Jewish History Tour & World War 1 Tour if you are interested in this. We also took the Siege of Sarajevo Tour and learnt lots about the terrible event that took place in the 90’s.
Don’t just stay in the City though. Take some tours to other places as well. We paid our respects to the victims of the Srebrenica genocide, learning lots about NATO during the excursion. Hiking with spectacular views around Lukomir. Historically interesting trip to Jacje & Travnik where we visited one of the key assembly halls where Tito founded former Yogoslavia & saw spectacular waterfalls. Also did the transfer day tour to Dubrovnik where we finished our holiday – this transfer tour was outstanding as we learnt so much more and visited some impressive sites including Mostar Bridge, Konjic Historic Town, beautiful springs & the most incredible waterfalls to swim at – Kravica Falls.
All of the guides were outstanding, really friendly & exceptionally knowledgeable. We learnt so much from them & they were all inspirational characters which is evident by the fact that we ended up buying on line several books to further enrich our understanding of the history in the region.
Top Tip: speak with Funky Tours before you book your flights. That way you can work out how long to stay in Sarajevo. Lots of other things we wish we would have had time to do including White Water Rafting , Quad Biking +++
And allow enough time in Sarajevo to visit the many museums, take the cable car for views & hikes, & just generally chill in this incredibly friendly city.
Highly recommend
We booked onto the 1 day trip to Lukomir with pick up and return to Sarajevo. Communication from both Edna and Ema prior to the trip was efficient and speedy.
Our guide Elvira was spot on time for the pick up and we had a great trip. It turned out to be only myself and my brother on the tour (we did a Monday).
The drive to the start point of the walk was only around 1 hour from Sarajevo, so not far at all. The walk was around 10 miles there and back. A great walk, not too challenging but more than enough to feel as though you’ve done a good days exercise!
The views were spectacular. Elvira was a good guide and gave us some local history along the way and was very friendly. It was handy having lunch included in Lukomir.
It was also a nice touch to receive a follow up email from Amela a couple of days later to check how we’d enjoyed the trip.
Throughout the whole process, communication from the team was efficient and they seemed very passionate about providing a good & memorable experience for their guests.
We did 2 weeks touring the country independently and were seriously impressed with what we found. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a great deal to offer from a tourism point of view, and if you’re in Sarajevo – be sure to book an extra day and take this tour!
These guys are simply the best!
I did hiking to Lukomir with Funky tour and it was the best hiking tour ever!
I cannot recommend Funky Tours enough, because these guys are simply the best. Started from very welcoming communications with Edna (who was extremely nice, helpful and friendly) and of course the best tour guides: Tarik and Stefan. These guys just made the whole experience one of the best! amazing sense of humour, great knowledge and interesting facts about the places we pass through, care about each of us (one was leading another was behind everybody just to make sure we are safe).
Thanks a lot guys. Highly recommend any tour with them I’m sure it’s gonna be an amazing experience.
